Male Baldness linked to heart disease

Studies have shown that men with greater hair loss are at risk more likely to develop coronary artery disease than those with hair. Bald Men may be at increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, but only if the hair loss occurs at the top of the head, according to a study published by University of Tokyo.

male baldness

Scientists from the Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, University of Tokyo analyzed six studies on male pattern baldness and coronary heart disease, conducted between 1993 and 2008 with about 40 000 participants from the United States and Europe.

The severity of baldness influence the degree of this risk, but only if it were hair loss at the crown or apex.

"These findings suggest that the vertex baldness is more closely associated with systemic atherosclerosis (coronary heart disease) than the frontal baldness," the study says.

"Thus, the cardiovascular risk factors should be reviewed carefully in men with vertex baldness in, especially the younger ones, and they probably should be encouraged to refine their cardiovascular risk profile," he added.

According to research, 30% to 40% of adult men suffer from male pattern baldness and the problem affects up to 80% of men aged 80.
