The first and former chairman of the Nigerian ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Solomon Lar, died at the age of 80 in a U. S. hospital, a government statement said on Wednesday.
The former chairman and first civilian governor of Nigeria's Plateau State was found dead in a U. S. hospital at 3:30 a.m. local time after a protracted illness, the state information commissioner, Abraham Yiljap, said in the statement.
Lar had been hospitalized since late 2012 before visiting Nigeria in May to mark the West African country's 13th Democracy Day.
