Mona Mugabe, President's Daughter Wedding in Harare

It was all smiles in Harare on Saturday afternoon as President Robert Mugabe’s daughter Bona Mugabe walked down the aisle accompanied by her parents: Mugabe and his wife Grace.


The two were joined in the holy matrimony by the Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Church, Father Kennedy Muguti at the first family’s residence in Borrowdale, Harare.

The much talked about ‘wedding of the year’ continued as the reception took place at the Mugabes’ ‘Blue Roofs’ Mansion in Helensvale Harare and guests include top Zimbabwean government officials, diplomats and South African President Jacob Zuma. The Blue Roof family’s mansion is worth an estimated $20m.


Customary formalities for the marriage were concluded last August when Simba Chikore paid a bride price of £21,000 plus 15 cows to the Zimbabwean president Mugabe for the hand of his 24-year-old daughter Bona.

The event is said to have cost millions of rands with various African artists including Zahara, the Soweto String Quartet, Koffi Olomide from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zimbabwean artists Jah Prayzah and Sulumani Chimbetu providing the entertainment.

The report said that while a total of 68 sitting and former heads of state and government were invited, sources in government said only about 10 attended.

For a country where the more than half the population is under poverty lines, this lavish spending on a wedding is cruel. Zimbabweans complain that desperately needed infrastructure projects in Harare have been side-lined in favour of preparations for the wedding celebrations.
