General and Mrs Yakubu Gowon on their Wedding Day in Lagos on April 19th, 1969.
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) 78, ruled Nigeria at the age of 29 from July 1966 until he was deposed in a coup by General Murtala Mohammed in 1975. He is the youngest president that ever ruled Nigeria.
Gowon, whose administration was the first to divide Nigeria into 12 states, earlier this year urged the National Assembly to stop the creation of new states and adopt the American electoral system of election.
