South Africa is ready for AFCON

South Africa prepares for AFCON

South Africa is more than ready to host the Orange 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament (AFCON) starting from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10, 2013, a government official said Friday.

Speaking at a business breakfast briefing in Johannesburg, the Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, called on all South Africans to rise to the occasion and show hospitality and human tolerance to all those who will visit the country for the tournament.

"Let's welcome all Africans and everybody across the world to the Africa Cup of Nations, the biggest tournament in the African continent," Mbalula said.

He also challenged the country's national team, Bafana Bafana, to do the nation proud by winning the AFCON cup. The minister said, "To our players we say they must rise to the occasion. They must fight with the agility of a cat and the ferocity of a cornered bull."

South Africa is hosting the 29th Edition of the AFCON tournament, with 32 matches to be played in the country's five different cities from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10.

The opening ceremony will be held at the National Sports stadium in Johannesburg where South Africa's Bafana Bafana will face the Cape Verde national team.
