South Africa suspends 8 officers linked to man's dragging death
South Africa's police chief announced Friday that eight officers allegedly involved in the death of a man who was bound and then dragged by a police vehicle have been suspended and that the local police commander has been removed from his post.
"We view this incident in serious light. We want stern action so that it may send a message to other officers that any untoward conduct will not be tolerated," Minister Siyabonga Cwele said.
Video footage of police dragging a Mozambican taxi driver behind a police van for a parking violation in Daveyton, South Africa went gone viral, prompting a public outrage.
The taxi driver died in the police cell on Tuesday, the day of the incident.
