28 killed in Nigerian church stampede, many injured

Church stampede in Anambra, Nigeria leaves at least 28 people at a prayer ground early Saturday dead.

The Nigerian police have commenced investigation into the deaths. The saturday night vigil, one of the most popular faith healing gatherings in Anambra state, ended on a tragic note yesterday at Uke in Idemili North Local Government area in what has been tagged Black Saturday. The vigil, organized by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obinma for prayers, healing and spiritual retreat, attracted an estimated 100,000 worshippers.

''We have visited the hospital in Nkpor and found 17 corpses that were brought in from the scene of the disaster," government spokesman Mike Udah

It is believed the death toll from the Saturday morning incident could go higher.
