James Avery was born in 1945 in Atlantic City. Avery served from 1966 to 1968 in the Vietnam War. Back in the U.S., he wrote poetry and scripts for television, including for "Ameda Speaks: Poet James Avery."
The news of the death of Avery was confirmed by his agent on CNN. Avery had recently undergone open heart surgery. He died to the effects of complications that occurred after surgery.
