Kevin Clash, the 27year old voice of Elmo on Sesame street is taking a leave of absence to fight the allegations he had a sexual relationship with a minor.
Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street, released a statement this Monday stating it received communication from a 23-year old man in June who alleged he had an affair when he was 16-years old with the 52-year old Kevin Clash
In a statement provided by his publicist, Clash admitted to the relationship, but said it began when the accuser was an adult.
“I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter. I had a relationship with the accuser,” Clash said. “It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was. I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation.
