Boko Haram killed 15 Christians by slitting their throats in an attack on a village in Maiduguri
The assault happened early Friday morning in the village of Musari on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where the sect known as Boko Haram first launched its guerrilla campaign of shootings and car bombings against Nigeria’s weak central government. The gunmen shouted religious slogans and later ordered those there to be gathered up into a group, said Mshelia Inusa, a primary school teacher in the village.
“We heard some people chanting, ‘God is great, God is great’ amid sounds of banging on doors of houses at about 1 am,” the teacher said. “A voice was heard ordering people to be slaughtered and also voices of children were heard screaming.”

Indian gang rape victim dies at Mount Elizabeth Hospital
Six men raped the 23-year-old medical student and beat her and her companion. They then inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped naked before throwing them out of the bus on Sunday December 16.
The woman had remained in an extremely critical condition since Thursday when she was flown to Singapore from India. “Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days. She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.”
She “passed away peacefully” with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side,” said Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth hospital where she had been treated since Thursday. “The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss,” he said in a statement.
Sex crimes have been rampant in New Delhi in recent years. Official statistics showed there were 572 rape cases in 2011 and more than 600 cases this year, but there could be more unreported cases.

UGANDA’S “KILL THE GAYS” OR ''KILL THE BILL'' ON HOLD
For the past few months, Uganda has been making news around the world for the controversial ''Kill the Gays'' bill that was introduced to legislation May 2011. Now, new headlines announce that, in the last few weeks, the suggestion of a death penalty in the bill has been dropped, but there has been no mention of dropping life in prison. The members of Uganda’s parliament are on vacation now, and won’t be coming back to work until February
The bill was in parliament until May 2011 where it was never voted on. It then resurfaced again in February 2012. It originally aimed to put homosexuals in prison for life or sentence them to the death penalty depending on the severity of the violation. The bill originally divided the violations into two categories, “The offense of homosexuality” and “Aggravated homosexuality.” An offender of “The offense of homosexuality” would be sentenced to life in prison, while an offender of “Aggravated homosexuality” would be given the death penalty. The bill also aimed to punish those who openly supported homosexuals; the bill could put people in jail for at least 5 years if they tried to help a homosexual in any way or if they promoted homosexuality. That meant that having a different opinion than the Ugandan government could cause an open minded person to go to jail.
The President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni said: "If there are some homosexuals, we shall not kill or persecute them but there should be no promotion of homosexuality.''
Nations and world leaders across the globe have condemned the bill, and many have threatened to cut off foreign aid to Uganda.
Ugandan Parliamentarian David Bahati, original author of the bill, now says that the latest version, which has not been publicly released, has “moved away from the death penalty after considering all the issues that have been raised.” However, Bahati also said the bill now focuses on “protecting children from gay pornography, banning gay marriage, counseling gays, as well as punishing those who promote gay culture,” each carrying jail terms.
Madonna's 'Raising Malawi' builds 10 Schools in Malawi
Madonna‘s charity 'Raising Malawi' has announced that it has helped to build 10 schools in the poverty-stricken country.
The primary schools, which are located in rural villages across Malawi, were built via a partnership between Madonna, Raising Malawi and the global non-profit organization buildOn. Six of the schools are already being used; all ten will be ready to receive students in January. Overall, the schools will educate 4,871 children.
In a statement, Madonna said that she is “overjoyed” that her “commitment…to help educate the children of Malawi has come to fruition.” She added, “In a country where girls have little opportunity for education, it’s additionally inspiring to know that more than half the students attending will be young girls.”
Madonna founded Raising Malawi in 2006 to help end the poverty and hardship endured by the one million orphans and vulnerable children in that country. In 2006 she adopted toddler David Banda under controversial circumstances and two years later adopted another child, Mercy James.
2012 Calabar International Carnival
It has been hailed as the best Carnival in this part of the world and we doubt anyone can dispute that. We bring you pictures from the ongoing Calabar Carnival taking place in Cross River. The carnival was started by Donald Duke, governor of the state between 1999-2007.
Besides the five bands, other non-competing bands, such as the visiting Brazilian Samba group and Vai Vai entertained the audience as they went on the 14- kilometre street parade that terminated at the U.J. Esuene Stadium for the final showdown among the competing bands. The event lasted into late hours.
Chairman of the Carnival Commission, Mr. Gab Onah, described this year’s edition as classic, adding that the carnival has gone full swing and now has a brand identity that everyone was willing to be associated with. The presence of over five countries and high-ranking personalities from around the country and outside, he said, is a testimony to the height that the 32-day festival itself has reached.
This will be the first time in history the Calabar Festival is holding without the governor in attendance, as Governor Liyel Imoke is on annual vacation.

Transformation in Nigeria's Rail Sector
A rare feat worthy of commendation as previous administrations in Nigeria had expended huge financial resources without tangible results.

“Given the heavy vehicular traffic on Nigerians roads, the resuscitation of that rail route will take the strain off the Lagos-Northern roads and this is worth commending,” Senator Uzodinma added.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Wednesday revived hopes for a cheaper means of transportation in the country as it conveyed 450 newly-recruited soldiers from Zaria to Lagos. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the passengers’ train with five coaches took off from Zaria at 1.15 p.m and was expected to arrive in Lagos at 2.15 p.m on Thursday 25hours later.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation commenced operation of mass transit on the Lagos-Kano route last week Friday. The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar inaugurated the trains and rode with Kano-bound passengers.
Nigerian pilgrims visit tomb of Jesus Christ
Nigerian pilgrims on Wednesday in Jerusalem, Israel, visited the tomb where Jesus was buried and resurrected.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the pilgrims had earlier visited the Antonio Fortress, the courtyard where Jesus was tried before Pontus Pilate and sentenced to death.
From the Fortress the pilgrims proceeded to Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, and prayed at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the burial place of Jesus.
The pilgrims also visited the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed a man, who had been bedridden for many years.
Beside the pool is the Church of St. Anne, dedicated to Anne, the grandmother of Jesus Christ.
“Many people passed through the gate but did not help the sick man, but Jesus came by and healed him.
“Pray that Jesus will not pass you by,” Venerable Peter Ogunmuyiwa said in a brief sermon at the church.
VMK released first African designed smartphone Elikia
A Congolese gadget designer VMK released Africa's first smartphone 'Elikia' Thursday. The phone made in China has started selling in Congo at a price of $171 (XOF 85,000). The phone is already being distributed by Airtel and Warid, two telecom operators in the country.
It features a 3.5-in QVGA display and a 650MHz processor with 512MB of RAM, and runs Android 2.3.6. The China-manufactured Elikia also comes with a 5 megapixel camera, VGA front-facing camera, 2G/3G connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Nelson Mandela released from the hospital for homecare
Former South African President Nelson Mandela was released Wednesday from the hospital after being treated for a lung infection and having gallstones removed, a government spokesman said.
The 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon will continue to receive medical care at home.
Mandela was released Wednesday evening and will receive "home-based high care" at his residence in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Houghton until he fully recovers, said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj.
"We thank the public and the media for the good wishes and for according Madiba and the family the necessary privacy," said Maharaj in a statement, using Mandela's clan name, a term of affection. The statement requested that Mandela's privacy continue to be respected "in order to allow for the best possible conditions for full recovery."
One person dead and 40 others injured from massive fireworks explosion at Jankara market, Lagos Island
Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday said one person was killed and 40 others were injured from a cracker that sparked a major fire outbreak in the Jankara area of Lagos Island, the country's commercial hub.
Spokesperson for the agency in Lagos Ibrahim Farinloye said "We recovered just a body so far and the body was burnt beyond recognition, but we have treated 40 injured persons."
Monsurat Isiaq, a market woman confirmed that more than 10 apartments were damaged after fireworks stored in a close by warehouse in Jankara market area on Lagos Island exploded.
Jankara market is the largest market in Lagos and sells everything from tie-dyed cloth, trade beads and jewelry to pirate cassettes, pottery and clothing. The use of knockout and fireworks during festive periods in the state is rampant.
Nigerian police recently banned fireworks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, especially in northern part of the country where fundamentalists had laid a siege with incessant bomb explosions and killings, forcing residents to flee to other parts of the west African country believed to be safe.

Mandela looks much better
South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela is looking much better, although still receiving medical treatment at a Pretoria hospital, President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday.
Zuma made the remarks after visiting Mandela to wish him a merry Christmas day on Tuesday morning.
"He is in good spirits, and he shouted my clan name Nxamalala as I walked into his ward," Zuma said. "He was happy to have visitors on this special day."
The doctors at the hospital are happy with the progress that Mandela is making, according to the president.
However, the doctors did not disclose when Mandela could be discharged from the hospital.
Venezuela's Hugo Chavez recuperating after cancer surgery
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is recuperating after a recent cancer surgery, local media reported Tuesday.
Chavez was able to leave bed rest to walk about and do some exercises as part of his post-operative recovery program, Vice President Nicolas Maduro announced late Monday, in the latest official update on the president's state of health.
Chavez called Maduro from Havana, Cuba, where he underwent surgery, and "during the 20-minute conversation that we had, he was walking, doing some exercises that are part of his daily treatment," Maduro told state-run VTV by phone.
News of the call from Chavez, which Maduro said was "a Christmas present," sparked a flurry of hopeful messages on Twitter by Venezuelans loyal to the ailing head of state.
Chavez underwent a fourth round of surgery on Dec. 11, since he was first diagnosed with cancer in the pelvic region in June 2011. The President‚ who has been in power since 1999‚ won another six-year term in October's presidential election and is scheduled to be sworn in to a third six-year term on Jan. 10.
Shinzo Abe becomes Japan's new prime minister
Shinzo Abe, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected Japan's new prime minister in a special session of the Diet on Wednesday.
In a lower house election, Abe gained 328 votes of 478 valid votes in the 480-seat chamber.
While in the upper house, where the opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) remains the largest force, Abe failed to gain more than half of votes in the first round election.
In the second round, Abe defeated his rival Banri Kaieda, the new leader of the DPJ.
The LDP returned to power by winning a landslide victory in the lower house election on Dec. 16 and put an end to the three-year rule of the DPJ.
Abe, who held the premier post from 2006 to 2007, will unveil his new coalition government formed by the LDP and the New Komeito Party which hold 325 seats in the more powerful lower house.

Fear of kidnapping affects Ndigbos Christmas travel
There are believed to be over 30million Igbos in Nigeria and as many as about 5million living in the diaspora. Traditionally, Igbos both at home and abroad, always travel back to the East for Christmas in what has become an annual pilgrimage.
However, this year, the figures are reported to be down due to the incessant menace of kidnapping, which has become very rampant across the East lately, with wealthy and influential Nigerians being abducted in exchange for huge sums.

Women in Swaziland risk arrest if they wear miniskirts or tops which expose part of their stomach as they will be violating moral standards, a police spokesperson has said.
Offenders face a six-month jail term under the ban, which invokes a colonial criminal act dating back to 1889."The act of a rapist is made easy, because it would be easy to remove the half-cloth worn by the women," Wendy Hleta was quoted as saying.
The ban also applies to low-rise jeans.
"They will be arrested," she said.
Hleta said women wearing revealing clothing were responsible for assaults or rapes committed against them.
"I have read from the social networks that men and even other women have a tendency of 'undressing people with their eyes'. That becomes easier when the clothes are hugging or are more revealing," Hleta said.

61st anniversary of Libya’s independence
Today, sixty-one years ago, on 24 December, 1951, Libya was proclaimed an independendant and sovereign state after the Dutch diplomat and Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Adrian Pelt, transferred state power to the late King Idris in his capacity as UN High Commissioner for Libya.
Libyans marked Monday the 61st anniversary of the North African country's Independence Day.
A national ceremony including a military performance was held in the Martyrs Square in the capital city of Tripoli, with the moored ships in Tripoli port ringing sirens to mark this special anniversary.
In a keynote speech during the ceremony, Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zaidan said Libya needs its people's hard work and "commitment to attend work every day with faithful spirit to build and develop the nation."
Last year was the first time in more than 40 years where Libyans were able to freely celebrate Independence Day, lighting the country up with flags, music and dancing. Despite ongoing issues in Libya, this year’S 24/12 will undoubtedly be a day of celebration and a time to remember the significance of the flag. Security beefed up in Lagos State ahead of Christmas Festival
Nigerian police in Lagos State on Friday said they have made adequate security arrangements ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Rebel attacks in recent years have overshadowed the festive season in the West African country, where a big bomb killed more than 40 Christians on Charismas Day last year at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Niger State.
State police spokesperson Ngozi Braide told reporters in Ikeja, the state capital, that special security strategies have been evolved to protect public places, including worship centers, markets, departmental stores, parks, gardens and event venues during the period.
Tight security is in place, she added, noting that undercover operatives have been deployed to strategic places all over the state.
She expressed happiness that the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, on highways by the state government had drastically reduced the crime rate by about 90 percent.
She called on members of the public to always be on the alert and report the movements of suspicious persons or groups to the nearest police station.
