Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong'o, the Mexican born-Kenyan raised actress pictured above won the 2014 Oscar's best supporting actress for her role in the movie 12 years a Slave, where she plays the role of Patsey, an enslaved fieldworker who is fantasized by the master.

Her victory, the second for Africa after Charlize Theron from South Africa had won in the same category in 2004, goes a long way to prove that the journey towards significance for African women is on course.

Academy Awards attract biggest audience for a US entertainment show since the Friends finale in 2004:
Oscars TV ratings hit 10-year high of 43m viewers. One main reason behind this spike is that many Africans queued up for Lupita.
