Longevity Test: How Long will you Live?

Aging Longevity Test Your Longevity Lifespan Life Expectancy

Have you ever wondered how long you will live in life? Ever wonder if there was a longevity test to calculate or predict how long you will live? Before you take these longevity test, I must warn you that there isn't any crystal ball to pinpoint exactly how long you'll live. Just fyi, most people who took the test claims they are on borrowed time and may have died yesterday or a month before using the longevity test. It's a test and you too can try it.

1. The Balance Test
See how long you can stand on just one leg. Then count how many times you can sit down and get up from a chair in one minute.

A study published in the British Medical Journal earlier this year found that among 53-year-old men and women, their ability to do these simple activities was an indicator of premature death. For men, those who could balance on one leg for over 10 seconds and get up from a chair over 37 times in a minute were found to have a lower risk of premature death than those were performed poorer. The same went for women, except being able to stand up and sit down in a chair over 35 times in a minute was the threshold for a lower risk of death over the course of the next 13 years.

2. The Sit-And-Rise Test
OK... this is one a bit of a workout. Using as little support from your body as you need, try sitting down and then getting up from the floor. Don't worry about being fast.

In a Brazilian study published in The European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention, men and women over 50 all the way to 80, who were able to sit down on the floor and then get up using no support from their hands at all or just from one hand were less likely to die over the course of the study. People who needed more support (both hands, or knee support) were 5-6 times more likely. Watch this video to test yourself.

3. The Grip-Strength Test
Who knew your handshake could be so telling? While a strong, firm handshake is often viewed as a sign of confidence, it can also be an indicator of your longevity.

4. The Walking Speed Test

As they say, a body in motion, stays in motion. Researchers have long used gait speed to measure overall health in older adults and studies show that older adults who walk faster tend to live longer than their slower-walking counterparts.

In one University of Pittsburgh study, over 90 percent of faster female walkers aged 75 went on to celebrate their 85th birthdays. The same went for over 85 percent of faster walking men.

People who walked at about 2.2 miles per hour were likely to live to the average life expectancy of someone their age. Every speed increase of 0.1 meters per minute translated into a 12 percent drop in their chances of dying in the next decade.

But researchers warn that simply walking faster won't tack on years to your life. Its your natural walking speed that's indicative of mortality.

Nigeria's #BringBackOurGirls rise ends

Nigeria: Kidnapped Girl protest & #BringBackOurGirls rise ends

Thousands of people in Nigeria and across the globe participated in the #BringBackOurGirls protest and demonstration late April and early May. That trend has risen to its biggest fall and death in a little less than two weeks.

The worldwide spread of the missing  Nigerian schoolgirls # BringBackOurGirls is reminiscent of many predictable trends and protest over the years. The kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls are not returned yet, the Nigerian government has let us die not down and the world goes quietly about an important issue: Education for all

Why Police watched a pregnant woman stoned and beaten to death?

Breaking News: Police watched a pregnant woman stoned and beaten to death

This is an incident, clearly highlighted, of what is wrong in this world, without any hint of grey area. The attack happened near the gate of the heavily guarded court, the two men said, on one of the busiest roads in Lahore.
The couple had been due to testify there that morning that their marriage was genuine in response to a false charge of kidnapping brought by Farzana's family.

It was not the first time her family had tried to kill the woman, said her lawyer, Rai Ghulan Mustafa.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has demanded to know why police apparently stood by while a pregnant woman was stoned and beaten to death by her family in front of one of the country's top courts, his spokesman said on Thursday.

Farzana Iqbal, 25, was attacked on Tuesday, police said, because she had married the man she loved. Her husband said that police did nothing during the 15 minutes the violence lasted outside Lahore High Court.

"I begged them to help us but they said, this is not our duty," Muhammed Iqbal told Reuters. "I took off my shirt (to be humble) and begged them to save her."

"I am directing the chief minister to take immediate action and a report must be submitted by this evening to my office," it said, quoting Sharif.

"She was screaming and crying 'don't kill me, we will give you money'," said Iqbal. He said he tried to save her but the mob of more than 20 beat him back.

Is this culture or religious insanity?

Nigeria Missing Girls Found but can't be rescued

Nigeria Missing Girls Found but can't be rescued
The Nigerian government knows where nearly 300 abducted schoolgirls are being held by Islamic extremists Boko Haram, but is incapable of using force to rescue them, the country's defense chief said Monday.

Air Marshal Alex Barde made the comments

"We want our girls back. I can tell you that our military can and will do it, but where they are held, can we go there with force?''
"Nobody should say Nigerian military does not know what it is doing; we can't kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back.''

He added: "The good news for the parents of the girls is that we know where they are, but we cannot tell you. ... We cannot come and tell you the military secret. Just leave us alone; we are working to get the girls back."

Meanwhile Nigeria's ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo has met with people close to Boko Haram in an attempt to broker the release of more than kidnapped schoolgirls.

Obasanjo, who backed Jonathan's 2011 presidential campaign, fiercely criticised him and his record as president in a letter released to the public last December and the two are widely thought to have fallen out.

According to the source, Obasanjo supported a prisoner-for-hostage swap that would see some of the girls released in exchange for a group of Boko Haram fighters held in Nigerian custody.

As a private citizen whose ties to the presidency have been damaged, Obasanjo likely does not have the authority to negotiate any deal on the government's behalf.

Critics hope they're not having sex. As strange as it is: son grabbing mum's ass. His argument is that the society is too conserved and Africans are too critical. It is being silly. Why won't the U.N. Security Council intervene in Nigeria Missing Schoolgirls

Why won't the U.N. Security Council intervene in Nigeria Missing Schoolgirls

The United Nations Security Council is stonewalling all efforts to intervene and help Nigeria in the Chibok missing schoolgirls crisis. Why hasn't the U.N Security Council offer to help Nigeria almost 40 days since the 200 schoolgirls were abducted by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

The United States is alone in helping Nigeria locate more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamists, Secretary of State John Kerry said yesterday, despite help on the ground from Britain, France and Israel.

With 80 military personnel sent to neighbouring Chad for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, the United States is the biggest foreign participant in the effort against the militant group Boko Haram.

Washington has also deployed surveillance drones, spy planes and about 30 civilian and military specialists to support Nigeria's security forces.

“Boko Haram, Nigeria, only the United States is there offering the assistance to help find those young women,” Kerry said during a dinner at the State Department.

“Other countries, not only aren't they invited, but they did not even offer.”

10 World Most Difficult Countries To Be A Mother: Why Nigeria?

10 World Most Difficult Countries To Be A Mother: Why Nigeria?

"Being a mother isn't easy, no matter where you live. But American women have it easier than many others around the world." Really? Being a mother in America is easy. That's very ridiculous to having Nigeria listed as world's #8 most difficult countries to be a mother. Have you been to Nigeria? While the current Chibok abduction may have played a huge role in this ranking, I personally find it as offensive as a Nigerian and also an insult against Nigerians.

I believe Nigerian mothers rank amongst the top 10 countries to be a mother. Not most difficult. The Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers 2014 report, released at the beginning of May, illustrates Nigeria's shocking inequality mothers are subject to around the world. As always, the list is dominated by countries in Africa. No European, Asian, North or South American countries.

#10: Cote d'Ivoire
#9: Chad
#8: Nigeria
#7: Sierra Leone
#6: Central African Republic (CAR)
#5: Guinea-Bissau
#4: Mali
#3: Niger
#2: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
#1: Somalia

Twin bomb blast kills 46 near Jos-Nigeria: many wounded

My country Nigeria is going through an extremely difficult time with an outbreak of attacks throughout the country.

The death toll from twin bomb blasts in the Nigerian city of Jos on Tuesday has risen to 46 with another 45 people wounded, Police Commissioner Chris Olakpe said. The explosion occured in the main business district of the central Nigerian city of Jos.

The explosions took place 15 minutes apart from each other, burning several shops, smashing windows and leaving rubble lying around at the scene.

"There was a loud bang that shook my whole house. Then smoke was rising," Jos resident Veronica Samson told Reuters.

"There were bodies in the streets and people rushing injured to hospital in their cars."
No group has said it carried out the attack. However, Jos has seen several deadly clashes between Christian and Muslim groups in recent years.

Islamist militant group Boko Haram has also carried out a spate of recent bombings.

A spokesperson for the regional governor told AFP news agency that most of the victims were women. The market and bus terminal are part of the commercial centre of Jos.

'Half of a Yellow Sun': New York movie premiere & review

'Half of a Yellow Sun': movie review

Those who reside in New York have a better chance to purchase a ticket and watch the movie at Quad Cinema on W 13th Street. I traveled some miles across the Hudson river to watch the movie premiere.

At first, I thought I had arrived at the wrong place. The line was barely existent close to 10 minutes before the movie premiere. I got my ticket and waited at the lobby to be summoned.

Minutes later, other movie watchers began to arrive at the theater. Most of them were old folks: predominantly white Americans. The movie started and the room began to thinly fill with Nigerians. Nigerians mostly in the 20's and 30's.

Minutes later, the movie minutes went deep. It had the old school music and cultural memories: music, environment, dress and history. My idol(Onyeka) did an awesome job as mama Odenigbo. Old renowned actors and actresses like the Orjis, the Glorias, the Nnajis and my man Chiwetel Ejiofor did an awesome job.

The movie ran for close to 2 hours and I enjoyed every minute of the highly anticipated Half of a Yellow Sun. Osas eye want to encourage you to go see the movie, learn about the Nigerian history and support the movie project. No spoilers on the movie. I will not narrate the movie for you my guy and sis. Go watch am. The movie is still on show. Google it. Get your ticket and enjoy Half of a Yellow Sun, written and directed by the Nigerian-British author Biyi Bandele, and adapted from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s award-winning historical epic set during Nigeria’s civil war in the 1960s. The movie is well acted and powerfully scripted.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from professional football and embark upon a new and exciting chapter in my life, as assistant manager of Manchester United. I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times. My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won’t be pulling on a United jersey again as a player, I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that dream playing with some of the best players in the world, working under an incredible manager in Sir Alex Ferguson, and most of all, playing for the greatest fans in world football. I have always felt and appreciated your support.

"I want to also give a huge thanks to the backroom staff and support teams we have and have had at Manchester United over the years. I would not have achieved the success I have without your continuing dedication and commitment to creating the best environment to enable the players to thrive. I would not have won 34 trophies in my career without you. I would also like to say a special thanks to my friends and family for all your love and support.

For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions - immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future. United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way. To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world.

Fully Painted Nude Woman Not Noticed in Public

Painted Nude Woman Not Noticed in Public
Would you notice if someone wasn't wearing pants?

In the video below, a model identified only as "Marie" saunters through the streets of Lille, France, according to Nerve.com. She is dressed normally from the waist up, but on the bottom wearing only a thong and jeans that have been literally painted on.
Nude Woman Not Noticed in Public

The video, uploaded to YouTube in April, has reached over 8 million views. Osaseye shared the video that was directed by Belgian students Sarah Baboro and David Lesage and features the bodypainting work of makeup artist Marie Przybylski.

"Sarah is a good friend of mine and body-painting is what I really enjoy as a make-up artist so I didn't even think twice about saying yes!" Przybylski told the Daily Mail.

Even watching the video, some said the video moved so fast and they couldn't tell the woman was nude, painted or had jeans on. Others argued that the video of the painted nude woman not being noticed in public is nothing out of the ordinary . A naked man or woman could be walking nude and the majority would not notice until someone mentioned it. Do you agree?

Maybe because she had a top on and a thong, so getting painted like that is not fully nude and as a result she wasn't noticed.

Nigeria abducted schoolgirls latest: President Goodluck Jonathan cancels Chibok trip

Nigeria abducted schoolgirls latest: President Goodluck Jonathan cancels Chibok trip

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has called off a visit the town where more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted, officials say. Instead of stepping up he's stepping down. Bad move, bad advisers, bad message to send to victim families and frustrated Nigerians.

President Goodluck Jonathan was scheduled to visit Chibok, in the north-east, on his way to a conference in France and as of today, called off for security reasons, the officials said. The state of emergency in the north-east states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa had been extended on Thursday for another six months.

His cancellation has called on more criticism and claims he's only ruling over the south.

President Jonathan has been criticised for not visiting the town - more than a month after the girls were seized. What a relief and hope, the visit would have been to the troubled families and region. Nothing was seen of the girls for almost a month after they were taken from Chibok.

President Jonathan had requested a six-month extension, calling the security situation in the region "daunting" and saying he was concerned by the mounting loss of life among civilians.

Beyonce Breaks Silence on Solange/Jay Z Attack

Beyonce Breaks Silence on Solange/Jay Z Attack

Beyonce has released an official statement regarding the altercation between her sister Solange and her husband Jay Z, which took place after the Met Gala.

Beyonce explained: "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it…Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”

Beyonce’s statement doesn’t clear the rumors and speculation about her sister Solange and husbanc Jay Z fight. Beyonce and Jay Z may release private snapshots of their lives on their social media sites, but it’s well known that they like to enjoy their privacy.

Life expectancy up worldwide; Remains below 55yrs in Nigeria

Life expectancy up worldwide; Remains below 55years in Nigeria
The news that people around the world continues to live longer is particularly true for Japanese but not for Nigerians. The World Health Organization says in an annual report released Thursday that life expectancy remains below 55 years in nine countries, all in sub-Saharan Africa: Angola, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

The United States does better than average, with a female life expectancy of 81 and male life expectancy of 76 – but ranks 37th overall and does not make the top 10 for either gender. Top honors go to Japan for women (87 years) and Iceland for men (81.2 years).

The best-improved countries include several that have made double-digit gains since 1990. Those include Liberia, which saw a 20-year increase (from 42 to 62); Ethiopia (from 45 to 64), Maldives (58 to 77), Cambodia (54 to 72), Timor-Leste (also known as East Timor) (50 to 66) and Rwanda (48 to 65).

WHO says several factors are at work:

• In poor countries, fewer children are dying before age 5, thanks to advances against premature birth, birth complications and childhood infections.

• In rich countries, fewer people are dying of heart disease and stroke before reaching 60, thanks to blood pressure control and other preventive efforts.

• In many countries, declining tobacco use is extending lives.

The 10 Proven Reasons Why Women Cheat In a Relationship

The 10 Proven Reasons Why Women Cheat In a Relationship

A new survey from Victoria Milan -- a dating site for married people seeking affairs -- suggests it's because they find their partner really, really annoying. (And apparently, the only way to cope with that is to hook up with another dude.)

The website polled 6,000 women on the site and a whopping 73 percent of the ladies said the chief reason they cheated was because they were annoyed by their partner's character flaws and behavior. The number one complaint the women brought up? A lackluster sense of humor, at 19 percent.

Unsurprisingly, more than half of the women admitted they were looking for a lover who did not possess the trait they found so obnoxious in their partner. How is this fundamentally different from the reasons men give to justify cheating. Osaseye points out number 1, 3 and 5 as interesting talking points. The thesis remains that "When women cheat its the mans fault. When men cheat its their fault." lol
Below, the 10 proven reasons women cited as excuses for cheating in a relationship:
1. He lacks a sense of humor (19%)
2. He's not understanding enough (16%)
3. He's not good in bed (14%)
4. He lacks good manners (11%)
5. He's lazy and doesn't have any life plans (10%)
6. He doesn’t care about his appearance and has poor hygiene (9%)
7. He's not successful (7%)
8. He doesn't pay enough attention to details and social obligations (5%)
9. He's unable to clean up after himself and he's a mama's boy (5%)
10. He's stingy (4%)

World's reaction to Jay Z and Beyonce's sister Solange Attack

A video published by TMZ surfaced over the weekend in what appears to be Jay Z and Beyonce's sister Solange Knowles getting into an altercation while in an elevator after the Met Gala.

In the 58-second clip obtained by TMZ, Solange can apparently be seen confronting her rapper brother-in-law while Beyonce stands by. In a separate video taken by Splash, the three can be seen exiting the elevator and walking past a group of photographers. Beyonce and Solange enter a waiting car while Jay Z walks into a different SUV.
So what happens? Reps for both parties were not immediately available for comment.

What we know from the videos?

Solange punching, throwing kicks at Jay Z. Beyonce so calm and watching closely without being involved.

Reactions:
Jay Z officially has 100 problems now.
I think Solange had too much booze and Jay-Z hit a nerve.
This proves there is a double standard when it comes to women putting their hands on a man. If there is no possible reason a man should put his hands on a woman, a woman has no reason to put her hands on a man. If Jay Z had knocked her lights out we would it would not have been so funny.
#Real men don't swing back
Why is Beyonce acting so calm?
It's very telling that in the video Beyonce doesn't appear to defend her sister or her husband. Picture of them leaving the elevator is even more telling. Solange looks upset and Beyonce and Jay-Z look like nothing happened. Families fight but the fact that they try to keep family laundry private is important. too bad that someone sold the elevator video to TMZ. Really bad form for some employee. I hope they get fired!
Beyonce did the right thing. It was their fight. Its probably not the first time and that might explain Beyonce behavior.
This makes me
Respect bey... Everyone hollering about her "not defending her husband" or "not aggressing with sola nge" doesn't make sense to me. She did the classy, I don't act like an animal thing. I can dig it.
What's your reaction to the video of Jay Z and Solange attack on surveillance camera?

Missing Nigerian Girls live in new Boko Haram videos

Missing Nigerian Girls live in new Boko Haram videos

A new video released by Islamist militants Boko Haram claims to show around 100 girls kidnapped from a school in Nigeria last month.

The group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, said they would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.

He said the girls had converted to Islam. The video, released on Monday, claims to show them praying.

Boko Haram abducted more than 200 girls from northern Nigeria on 14 April and threatened to sell them.

The BBC's John Simpson in the northern city of Maiduguri said that Boko Haram's comments showed signs that the group were willing to negotiate.

Three of the girls are shown speaking in the 17-minute video, obtained by French news agency AFP, wearing the full-length hijab.

Two girls say they were Christian and have converted to Islam, while the other says she is Muslim.

Correspondents said the girls appeared calm and one said that they had not been harmed

Nigeria Kidnapping Victim Tells Her Story Of Torture

Nigeria Kidnapping Victim Tells Her Story Of Torture
Kidnapped and held last month from a school in northeastern Nigeria by the group Boko Haram, the schoolgirl managed to escape and tells her story of torture.

"They then moved all of us to the main gate and brought their cars where they loaded the food they had taken and asked us to get in," one of the girls recalled.

"The girls that had no shoes on and were not wearing veils were told to go and fetch them as they started to set the school on fire."

More than 300 girls were abducted on April 15 from their school in Chibok in the country's remote northeast.Fifty-three escaped and 276 remain captive.

The escaped girls spoke to visiting Borno state officials on May 5. In the video, which was handed out by the Borno State governor's office, the women gathered at the school cried, as the students spoke of their ordeal.

Another girl recounted how she and her friend decided to run for their lives.

"I told my friend that it is better to be killed than to be taken to a place that we did not know," she said.

Parents of the girls still in captivity, pleaded for their rescue.

"Now we don't know if our children are eating, if they are sleeping on the floor, we do not know," said one distraught mother.

First Lady's Fashion: Nigeria's Patience Jonathan worst looks

First Lady's Fashion: Nigerian Patience Jonathan worst looks
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (2nd L) and his wife Cheng Hong (1st L) pose for a photo with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan (2nd R) and his wife during the welcoming ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria, May 7, 2014.

The picture above has become the second most talked about topics behind the Chibok missing girls.First lady fashion hell. Patience Jonathan does not act or look like a first lady. Her sense of fashion is zero. Is it harsh on the first lady. Let's take a look at the picture again(see below): She wears an African print with a mama old granny style and the color combo is repulsive.  Patience Jonathan has been named Worst Dressed woman and first lady in Nigeria. This photo doesn't do much help either.

Nigerian President's latest on #BringBackOurGirls

Nigerian President's latest on #BringBackOurGirls

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said Thursday in a speech delivered at the opening of the plenary sessions of the ongoing World Economic Forum on Africa.

"In fact, by your presence(China, America, France, Canada) here in Nigeria at this time, you have already supported us to win the war against terror. If you had refused to come because of fear, the terrorists would have jubilated and even have committed more havoc. But your coming here to support us morally is a major blow on the terrorists and we will conquer the terrorists," Jonathan told delegates of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Abuja.

"I believe that the kidnap of these girls will be the beginning of end to terror in Nigeria,"

"The terror will not stop the world from moving. The terror will not stop Africa from moving. Terror will not stop Nigeria from moving," he added.

Jonathan had dismissed news that the government was negotiating with the insurgents to secure the release of the abducted school girls. "The government cannot negotiate with faceless people," said Jonathan, while reassuring parents, guardians and all Nigerians that government would rescue all the abducted girls.

Top 10 Tech Companies to work at in Nigeria

Top 10 Tech Companies to work at in Nigeria

New data from Ventures magazine reveals the top tech companies to work for in 2014 in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, the IT sector currently contributes 8.7 percent to GDP, according to figures from the country’s ICT Ministry, an equivalent of N6.97 trillion ($44.3 billion) out of the total rebased Gross Domestic product (GDP) of N80.22 trillion ($510 billion)

  1. Jason Njoku (iROKO Partners) – Jason is the cofounder of iROKO Partners, an African focused media streaming platform that has drawn significant attention since inception for its innovative thinking in exploiting an untapped million dollar opportunity. A chemistry graduate from the University of Manchester, Jason identified a huge gap in the delivery of local content online and founded iROKO Partners with partner Bastian Gotter in 2010. Together, they have built the business to prominence; today iROKO is the largest Youtube partner in Africa, with over 500,000 movie licenses purchased. It has over 14 million hours of media content on its license rights and more than 800,000 registered users, making it the largest distributor of Nollywood content globally. It recently acquired an $8 million investment from hedge fund, Tiger Global.
  2.  Sim Shagaya (Konga) – Serial entrepreneur, Sim Shagaya, along with 10 employees began what is now arguably the largest ecommerce business in the country. A vastly experienced tech professional, following stints at Google, Microstrategy and RealNetworks, Sim left the employee phase to begin his entrepreneurial venture, with his first major break the 2012 launched Konga.com, which has maintained the heights of a promising start and has received series of investment amounting to $15 million from keen profit seekers including South African-based Naspers and Kinnivik. Sim has followed his inaugural cash-cow with DealDey, a locally coined name that implies a deal offering platform, sourcing the best discount offers from product and service providers across the country.
  3.  Abasiama Idaresit (Wild Fusion) – London School of Economics graduate had one – and only one – thing in mind when he returned to Nigeria, “to see how the Internet could help transform the business landscape in Nigeria.” That though drove the launch of Wild Fusion, a digital marketing firm, in 2008. His company is famous for turning a $250 initial deal into a million dollar venture. It later went on to become the first company in Nigeria to earn the Google Adwords Partner certification, and provides internet marketing services for international brands such as Pespi and Vodacom. Its operation extends across the African space, reaching countries like Ghana and Kenya.
  4.  Mike Adenuga (Globacom) – One of Nigeria’s richest men, Mike Adenuga is the founder of Globacom, the country’s second largest telecom operator, only behind MTN. Registered as the fourth mobile operator in 2003, Glo swiftly raised competition amongst local operators, moving to battle with MTN at the time. It has been credited for championing the significant drop in cost of telecommunication services, with prices of sim cards falling from a high of N40,000 ($250) to as low as N200 ($1.2) in less than a half-decade. Glo is also the first company to roll a submarine fibre optic cable from the UK, a project that gulped more than $800 million.
  5.  Tayo Oviosu (Paga) – A Stanford trained professional, Tayo is the founder of Paga, a Nigerian money transfer service firm. It was established after Tayo, a former business development manager at CISCO, noticed that while Nigeria had an abundance of mobile devices, off-the-counter banking services remained relatively scarce. Paga would provide the solution for this underserviced space.Today, Paga has over a million subscribers utilizing its mobile money services for daily transactions and has received funding from institutional investors including Acumen fund, Adievo Capital and much more. The most recent endorsement of its business progress was the news that renowned economist and coiner of the BRICS and MINTS acronyms, Jim O’Neil, recently invested in the indigenous platform.
  6.  Valentine Obi (etranzact) – A vastly experienced IT individual, Valentine is the founder and CEO of etranzact, a local multi-application and multi-channel electronic transaction switching and payment processing platform. Launched in 2003, it has evolved into a multinational brand, rolling out products such as ATM, Internet, POS, and Mobile in 6 other countries including South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Cote d’voire and United Kingdom. Following the award of a mobile money license, etranzact moved swiftly to exploit this emerging space, launching a subsidiary business, PocketMoni.
  7.  Florence Seriki (Omatek) – She went from being a computer tutor to a saleswoman after the opportunity to sell computers to her high-end clients surfaced. Although she has a chemical engineering background, today, she can boast of several IT awards and her company, Omatek made history in Nigeria by becoming the first IT firm to be listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange. It currently sells at N0.50 per share on the Nigerian bourse and has a market capitalization of N1.47 billion ($90 million). Omatek is currently pushing an initiative tagged “e-xpress” aimed at helping Nigerians realize their dreams of owning personal computers in an easy and convenient form by offering a flexible Acquisition and payment method.
  8.  Leonard “Leo” Stanley Nnamdi Ekeh (Zinox Technologies) - A trail blazer in the Nigerian IT industry, Stanley Ekeh set up Zinox Technologies Limited in 2001 determined to fill the gap of manufacturing computers locally. To achieve this, Zinox Computers was launched – Nigeria’s First Internationally Certified Branded Computers which came with a Naira sign and a power supply designed to country’s unstable power. With Task Systems Limited, his first company, he computerized 95 percent of the Print Media, Publishing Houses and Advertising Agencies in Nigeria, winning several outstanding industry Awards. He also pioneered IT Solutions and Distribution in West Africa through ITEC Solutions Limited and Technology Distributions Limited, TD respectively, both award-winning companies. He has also been involved with ICT Brokers, Buyright AFRICA Dotcom and ICT Connect. Eke’s Zinox last year launched its Zipad tablet, another pioneering feat by the indigenous company.
  9.  Funke Opeke (Mainstreet Technologies) – is the CEO of MainOne Cable Company. She founded Mainstreet Technologies, developer of MainOne Cable, a submarine communications cable stretching from Portugal to South Africa with landings along the route in Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria. The system which will be extended to 10 other cities in its second phase is expected to increase open access to telecom operators and Internet service providers in sub-Saharan Africa. Opeke ensured that the network operational center (NOC) for the entire system was located in Nigeria in order to encourage local content development through transfer of critical networking technologies skills. Her giant strides caught the eye of international investors like the Pan-African Infrastructure Development Fund (PAIDF) and the Africa Finance Corporation. Some Nigerian banks have also invested in the MainOne Cable project.
  10.  Mitchell Elegbe (Interswitch) - An idea ran through Mitchell Elegbe’s ingenious mind while still heading the Group Marketing and Business Solution at Telnet Nigeria in 2001. It was to build a system that would enable electronic transaction of money. A year later, Elechi had founded Interswitch. Today, Interswitch not only has the infrastructure for online, real-time transaction switching and payment processing, its shared infrastructure has been adopted by banks, government agencies and corporate organizations to accelerate growth while reducing cost of operations. The growth of the company and the future such growth holds encouraged investors to join Elegbe’s Interswitch success story. Helios Investment Partners, International Finance Corporation and Adlevo Capital acquired over 60 percent of the company’s shares in 2010, retaining the goal-getter, Mitchell as CEO and driver of the Interswitch train to the great future they see ahead.

Boko Haram Kidnap 8 more girls

Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped eight girls aged 12 to 15 from a village near Maduguri in northeast Nigeria overnight, police and residents said on Tuesday in the midst of the current controversy of 276 missing Chibok schoolgirls.

"They were many, and all of them carried guns. They came in two vehicles painted in army colour. They started shooting in our village," said Lazarus Musa, a resident of Warabe, where the attack happened.

A police source, who wanted to remain anonymous said the girls were taken away on trucks, along with looted livestock and food. The Islamist rebels are still holding more than 200 girls they abducted from a secondary school on April 14

Nigerian Missing Girls name list, photos

US Secretary of State John Kerry has vowed that Washington will do "everything possible" to help Nigeria deal with the armed group Boko Haram, following the kidnapping of scores of schoolgirls.

"Let me be clear. The kidnapping of hundreds of children by Boko Haram is an unconscionable crime," Kerry said in a policy speech in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Saturday.

"We will do everything possible to support the Nigerian government to return these young women to their homes and hold the perpetrators to justice. That is our responsibility and the world's responsibility," Kerry said.
