From Lagos, Nigeria: The Assassination of Dr. Toyin Hamzat

Dr Toyin Hamzat assassinated in Ogun State, Nigeria
Dr. Toyin Hamzat, a former Chairman of Ikeja Local Council and a former aide to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and Bola Tinubu was reportedly shot in the head at Sabo, Sagamu, Ogun State, at about 9.00 p.m. on Sunday after leaving Sagamu Town Club and was heading home to Ijebu-Aiyepe, Odogbolu Local Council.

The killers, it was learnt, blocked his car with an Ogun painted taxi, emerged, shot him point blank and reportedly left the scene without taking his car or any possession.

Fashola who was at Ijebu-Aiyepe Monday to condole with Hamzat’s family, described his death as a personal loss to him, Lagos State and the entire Southwest family of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

Tinubu described Hamzat as an illustrious and a progressively minded politician.

He said: “Hamzat’s death like many that occur daily in similar circumstances must serve to reawaken the nation’s leaders and security agencies to be more alive to the challenges of security of lives and properties.”

Hamzat was a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).

Ogun State Police spokesman ASP Muyiwa Adejobi said: “It was a case of assassination. Nothing was taken away from him. Five suspects have been arrested and in custody at the state police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”

One of the taxis reportedly impounded has been identified as the one used during the operation.

A police source also confirmed the arrest of a man who allegedly fired the shot that killed Hamzat.
