"Today, women make up half of the workforce, but they still earn only 77 cents for every dollar that men earn. That's wrong, and in 2014 even outright mockery. A woman is entitled to the same amount of money for the same work. They also have the right to have children without having to sacrifice her job. A mother may get a free day to care for a sick child or a sick parent without being financially in trouble for it, and a father moreover.'s high time to deal with workplace policy that appears to come from an episode of Mad Men. David Cameron, Bono, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Poverty and Climate Change
Global leaders argued Friday that efforts to eradicate poverty must be linked to climate change, saying that rising temperatures will have widespread effects on everything from food supplies to education.
Panelists at two separate sessions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland — among them Bill Gates, Al Gore and U2 frontman Bono — underlined the importance of the issue. The United Nations is also making climate change a priority at Davos this year, pushing for a U.N.-brokered internationally binding climate treaty in Paris in 2015.
At a debate sponsored by The Associated Press, British Prime Minister David Cameron said the next U.N.-led campaign to eradicate extreme poverty must make the climate a top priority. More than one billion people live in extreme poverty by the World Bank's definition, living on less than $1.25 a day.
"We do need to prioritize, but I would argue if we do want to help the one billion, we need to put in climate change," Cameron said.
The AP's debate also featured Bono and officials from Nigeria, Save the Children International and Prudential Plc. It was looking ahead to the expiration of the U.N.'s "millennium goals" to reduce poverty, hunger and child mortality and combat disease by 2015, and to envision what goals should be set for the next 15 years. The session was moderated by AP Senior Managing Editor Michael Oreskes.
Cameron was co-chair of a high-level U.N. panel that recommended 12 goals to replace the eight millennium goals. He asked Bono to help create a marketing campaign to help eradicate extreme poverty by the year 2030 — a request Bono took up with a note of irony.
"Extraordinary things happen in Davos — no more extraordinary than an Irish rock star complimenting a Conservative British Prime Minister for his leadership in the fight against extreme poverty. Anything can happen," Bono said, before turning directly to Cameron. "Thanks dude. I'm a top-line melody guy, and I will try and help with the assignment. But I have a feeling it's people not in this room that are going to execute it."
Good governance and fighting corruption are key. "Capitalism ... is not immoral, but it is amoral," Bono said. "We need to give it some instructions."
"We need to talk when companies misbehave," agreed Prudential Plc Group Chief ExecutiveTidjane Thiam. "Corruption gets in the way of mobilizing resources."
At a separate debate on climate change, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged governments that there is little time to address the issue.
"The time you must be very, very serious," he said. "Look beyond your borders."
Other panelists included Gore, Gates, Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, Unilever CEO Paul Polman and Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who also appeared on the AP panel.
Delays in cutting man-made emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases will delay efforts to eradicate poverty, they said.
"We're trying to look at everything we do through a climate lens," said Kim. He is calling on government leaders at Davos to put a price on carbon and have financial regulators require that companies assess and disclose their exposure to climate risks.
He also is urging that market for green bonds be doubled to $20 billion this year and $50 billion in 2015 to encourage more clean energy use.
Gates expressed some caution, however, about a convergence of themes. "I don't think that focusing on climate change should take away from the development agenda," he said.

Meet 16 year old African who started a business with $14
Back in 2008, when both of Mupuya's parents had lost their jobs and could only afford to cover his school fees. "I had to get to meet my basic needs by myself," remembers the Ugandan businessman. "I decided to face the world alone." He recalled.
According to CNN, the government of Uganda came to Mupuya's aid. At the time, officials in the country announced that they were considering a ban on plastic bags to curb environmental damage. Mupuya, who was still in secondary school, immediately saw this as an opportunity to launch a paper bag production company.
"I conducted a feasibility study, market research around retail shops, kiosks, supermarkets around Kampala and discovered there is need and potential market for paper bags."
To start out his small operation, Mupuya figured out he needed a capital of 36,000 Ugandan shillings ($14). He raised the first $11 from selling 70 kilos of used plastic bottles he'd collected over one week. Mupuya then borrowed the remaining $3 from his school teacher and embarked on his entrepreneurial journey producing paper bags on a small scale.
Since then, the business has grown extensively and today, at the age of 21, Mupuya is the owner of Youth Entrepreneurial Link Investments (YELI), the first registered Ugandan company to make paper bags.
The young entrepreneur employs 16 people who produce up to 20,000 paper bags each week. His long list of clients includes restaurants, retail stores, supermarkets, medical centers, as well as multinational companies like Samsung -- YELI has made about 1,000 niche bags for the local stores of the electronics company.
"Right now I have 72 clients," says Mupuya. "Ninety per cent of our clients always come back."
"The awards I have won give me courage to push on with my business," says the young entrepreneur.
"It shows to me how I am doing the right thing and it helps me define the impact am creating."
Uganda has attempted to ban plastic bags in a bid to deal with its acute waste management problem and promote environmental conservation. Yet, they are still used in Kampala and often block drainage systems or collect in heaps on the side of the road.
Mupuya, however, believes Ugandans will eventually choose paper over plastic and he even plans to build a recycling operation.
"A paper bag is eco-friendly, it can easily decompose," he says. "But plastic bags take too long, so that is the difference."
"It needs time to produce the right quality and quantity to all clients, because it's run manually," he says. "(It's) quite hard to catch up with some clients who are used to cheap plastic bags," adds Mupuya. "My next step is to get a machine because I am only able to supply 5% of the demands I have."
"My vision is to have a cleaner Africa by eradicating use of plastic bags and emphasis on paper recycling," he says. "I dream of having a big plant where I am able to supply paper bags all over Africa," adds Mupuya, "putting emphasis on sensitizing about environmental conservation."
"So I believe this is just the start."

Fashola Launch Oshiomhole's 2015 Presidential Bid
At a youth summit organised by the Edo State government with the theme “Nigeria’s Centenary – Defining the Issues and Setting Agenda for the Future of Our Youths” in Benin City, the Edo State capital, Fashola said: “If Governor Adams Oshiomhole decides to run as president of this country, he will have my vote. He is the kind of leader that Nigeria needs. I say that because I have spent five memorable years of my life in Benin City as an undergraduate and as a youth corps member and they are very fond memories that I hold dear in my heart today.
“I am always looking forward to coming here each time I am invited. The excitement to come here is at an all-time high. Since my brother assumed office as your governor – because every time that I come here, for all the right reasons – Benin City has not remained the same. It has changed positively and continues to change.
“On my way here, I drove past my former office on Sapele Road and clearly the place has transformed. And the Airport Road is now wider. I know what Ring Road used to be and Akpakpava Road. It is nice to know that tourism is back, flights are regular and you have done it because you have allowed yourselves to be led by a man who can inspire you to action. And I don’t think that anybody can claim the credit for what has happened here if not the people of Edo State”, Fashola said.
The former labour leader Adans Oshiomhole has not given any hints as to whether he will contest as president like Fashola. Oshiomhole argued that every country has its own history and that Nigeria has come to stay. “As a people, what we should think about is how we get our people properly managed such that the wealth of this great country is expressed in the quality of life of the citizen. How do we address the paradox of a nation so rich and yet its people getting poorer?
“How do we raise the issue of how the promise of democracy can be fully realised, if the federal government continues to pocket 52 per cent and ask all the 36 states and the FCT to share 26 per cent and the rest to be shared by 774 local government areas?” he asked.
Minister Stella Oduah speak on Airports, Nigeria & Scandals
”For over 38 years that our airports were a damning commentary on our status as part of the civilised world; or when our airspace existed without the requisite navigational facilities to make the airspace safe; these category of persons saw no evil and heard no evil while they happily clapped their ways to the banks!
“This group has carried on with bitter venom, throwing decency and honour overboard, lying and misleading the Nigerian populace even when they know the truth because my team and I changed the game in favour of Nigeria attaining her pride of place in the comity of nations.
“For this category, that is the entrenched, corrupt and profligate individuals and entities who have caused the serious rot in the aviation sector, I owe no apologies. All I owe them is to further inform them that the current generation has seen through them and are no longer willing to tolerate their antics.”
“The massive investment and the aggressive prosecution of this agenda in this regard have seen the Aviation sector being transformed. Today, 22 airports owned by the Federal Government are at various stages of becoming decent and world class terminals."
”Nigeria’s airspace has become one of the safest in the world with the deployment of modern navigational equipment and infrastructures. The oversight capacity of the whole sector has been strengthened with the relevant regulations in place and the training and retraining of personnel.”

"We condemn Nigerian Homosexuality" says Cardinal John Onaiyekan
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, , has commended the Nigerian government for its uncompromising stand on the anti-gay law in spite of widespread criticisms.
Onaiyekan, briefing newsmen on activities to mark his 70th birthday in Abuja on Friday, said Nigeria, being an independent country, should stand firm on its culture, tradition and morals.
“The church accepts people as they are, we condemn homosexuality, Nigeria is an independent country and we do not beg for food.
“We have every right to order our social life in any way we think it should go. Our social life should not be organised on the basis of what others think.
“On this note, I commend our National Assembly and Mr President for resisting all the pressures and enacting a law against homosexuality,’’ he said.
“Signing the bill into law by President Jonathan in spite of pressures from within and outside the country should be commended by all and sundry.’’
“The world is at crossroads and there is nothing new under the sun. `We all know that this is not the first time we have heard about the agitation for gay rights but our position, as a church, has not changed.
“Even when some sections of society view same sex issues as moral disorder acts, homosexuality has not stopped, it still happens in the open around the world. It doesn’t mean that it should be accepted.’’
“God has been very generous to Nigerians. It is time for them to have a rethink and change for the better.
“Governments at all levels should partner with the church to address management deficits in key sectors as health, education and other social services where the church has comparative advantage.’’

Lesego Daniel the eat grass Pastor in Police Trouble
Eat grass and get healed or sick |
Pastor Lesego Daniel, who is based in Garankuwa, north of Pretoria, is the General Oversea of Rabboni Centre Ministries in Pretoria, South Africa. He told dozens of followers to eat grass because “it will bring them closer to God”.
“Sleep,” he screams. Six people in the marquee immediately go into deep slumber.
The “miracle man” orders other congregants to slap and trample on them. But the sleepers remain rigid and unresponsive.
Several minutes later, he yells: “Wake up,”and they break out of their deep sleep.
“You can leave them like this for six months. I love this, I don’t want to be bored. You can even make police go to sleep when they come to arrest you,”
“Yes, we eat grass and we’re proud of it because it demonstrates that, with God’s power, we can do anything,” says Rosemary Phetha.
Abuse? No, its a miracle |
The 21-year-old Unisa law student says she had been battling a sore throat for more than a year. She claims it was healed after Daniel “turned me into a sheep and instructed me to eat grass”.
Her testimony is shared by 27-year-old Doreen Kgatle, of Ga-rankuwa, who suffered a stroke two years ago.
“I could not walk but soon after eating the grass, as the pastor had ordered, I started gaining strength and an hour later I could walk again,” said Kgatle, clad in the ministry’s R150 T-shirt. Nearby, a visibly sick woman lies draped in a black cloth.
