Nigeria's Unemployment Rises more than forecast

Nigeria's unemployment rate edged up to 40.3 percent in February. The increase in population is one of the challenges facing Nigeria's labour market with a malfunctioned government. Increased government spending and inflation have prevented economic development in Nigeria.

unemployment in nigeria

Unemployment is soaring up despite the fixated figures the national bureau of statistics has revealed. The failed government program's to curb the growing concern of joblessness has only resulted to money laundering among those in power.

The unemployment rate in Nigeria was last reported at 23.9 percent in 2011. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has last reported the figure of unemployed Nigerians in the first half of 2012 at 23.9 per cent, up from 21.1 per cent in 2010 and 19.7 per cent in 2009. The numbers for the latter part of 2012 and 2013 is currently not available.

The National Population Commission (NPC) has said the Nigeria’s population has risen from the 140,431,790 it was five years ago  to 167,912,561 as at October 2011.
This represents an annual population growth rate of 5.6 million people.

Only in Nigeria...Man gets 45 years for stealing Governor's phone.

man gets 45 years for stealing phone

The accused was arraigned on a six-count charge of conspiracy, theft, obtaining by false pretence, obtaining by force and impersonation, among other offences.

Justice Jide Falola of High Court 5, citing Section 1, Sub-section 1, paragraph `C’ of the Advance Fee Fraud Act and Section 218 Cap 35, Laws of Osun State, 2003, found the accused guilty as charged.

The accused was sentenced to 10 years for each of counts 1, 2 and 3 and 5 years each for three other counts.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

The governor’s cell phone was stolen on Nov. 28, 2010, at his swearing-in-ceremony.

So simple for everyone to see: 45years for stealing a cellphone vs No imprisonment for genocide, money laundering, murder and so on. Only in my country. Only in Nigeria you get this miscarriage of justice.

Adichie 'deeply care about Nigeria'

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is one of Nigeria's best writer. Her novel "Half of a Yellow Sun'' is being made into a movie and her new book the"Americanah" shows modern life in Nigeria's largest city, Lagos.

"I'm writing about where I care about and I deeply, deeply care about Nigeria," Adichie told The Associated Press. "Nigeria is the country that most infuriates me and it is the country I love the most. I think when you're emotionally invested in a place as a storyteller, it becomes organic."

Adichie describes herself as looking "at the world through Nigerian eyes," but she doesn't hold back on criticizing its culture that fosters widespread government corruption. Or what she perceives as the excessive, neutered politeness of "political-correct language" in the U.S.

"Nigeria wasn't set up to succeed, but the extent of its failure is ours. It's our responsibility," she said. "This country is full of so many intelligent people, so much energy, so much potential, so why are we here?"
How many Nigerians out there deep care about the country?

I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”

Jada felt the need to clarify her statements and debunk the ongoing rumors.

In her Facebook response, the 41-year-old said that while “there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not.”

“Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one.”

The reason Men fake Orgasms

According to a British study revealed by the online pharmacy Uk Medix, 22% of men would pretend to have an orgasm because they care too much about their partner. 74% of women are more likely to simulate orgasm during sex against 22% of men. Dr. Abraham Morgentaler has done research on the male orgasm for over 25 years, but the surprise was the reason why men fake orgasm.
men fake orgasm

While women simulate orgasm to stop the antics faster, men pretend to achieve sexual climax because they do not want to achieve ecstasy too fast and do not want to disappoint their partner.

"The big surprise for me when I started work on the subject, is to realize that once in a relationship, the man seems to care more about his partner than himself," said Dr. Morgentaler.

The figures in this study are not far from those published by the University of Kansas earlier this year. The researchers demonstrated that 30% of men simulate orgasm not to hurt their partner, who had their pleasure in the act.

Nigeria's fuel subsidy in documentary

Fuelling Poverty, the 30-minute documentary depicting the massive street protests in 2012 over the removal of oil subsidies. The film, which features Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka and civil rights activists, explores the siphoning of billions of dollars from government officials to private companies. “Fuelling Poverty” was screened at the 20th New York African Film Festival this month and won the Best Documentary at the 2013 African Movie Academy Awards on April 20.

The documentary has been viewed more than 50,000 times on YouTube as of Tuesday.

The documentary can be seen online but is “prohibited from exhibition in Nigeria” according to officials from the National Film and Video Censors Board.

Why? Who wants her dirty underwear hanging outside the market square?

“We don’t have a government. It’s a whole big banana republic,” Emmanuel Tom Ekin, a barber, says in the film. “They’ve been telling us stories all the time, deceiving us. And right now, in our faces, they are still deceiving us.”

Nigeria’s film industry could get a boost next month if the film “Half of A Yellow Sun” is screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

From Nigerian Refugees to Terrorists

Heavy fighting between the joint task force and Islamist militants in northern Nigeria killed at least 187 people. Boko Haram claims responsibility for the attack. The gun battles also involved the use of rocket-propelled grenades and assault weapons in the remote town of Baga near the border with Chad for hours on Friday evening, officials say. More than half the town of Baga was destroyed by fire.

                                   Nigerian Refugees to Terrorists

This violence continues predominantly in northern Nigeria. The politicians viewed them as refugees. They were treated as such. They do not want Amnesty. They want the creation of a new Islamic state in Nigeria. On Friday evening, they killed 187 people and continues to spread the terror to civilians. They are fighting to overthrow the Nigerian government and create an Islamic state.

Who are Nigeria's Boko Haram?

They are citizens of Nigeria. Born and bred in the country. Most of them graduated from University and found it hard to get into the job industry. Some of the children in the group comes from good parents with a honest family. They seemed good in math and science plotting these devastating attacks against their motherland country. How did these fellow Nigerians turned from being good students to radical terrorists?

There is one mystery left: who’s behind these refugees? We know that there are political demons behind that mask funding their attacks?

Nigeria Signs Electricity Deals with Private firms

Nigeria and 15 Private firms struck long-anticipated electricity deals Monday in an effort to end decades of power cuts. Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan signed the deals on Monday handing over state electricity assets to the 15 bidding companies.
Nigeria signs electricity deals

One of Nigeria's main problem is power cuts and blackouts. This milestone in privatization of state electricity to the private firms will hopefully help fix the problem and kindly keeps the lights on.

Economists say power outages cost Nigeria, Africa's second biggest economy billions of dollars on imported diesel for generators and in lost output. They say current GDP growth of around 7 percent could be pushed into double figures if electricity supply could be sorted out.

Power output is currently about 4,000 megawatts for a country of 170 million people.

"Today's event signals a major step forward in the implementation of our power sector road map," Jonathan said. "I congratulate the signing parties for reaching this significant target in our collective efforts to revitalize this sector, which is so important to our lives and development."

Dangote agrees to build Refinery in Nigeria

Dangote is planning to take part in rebuilding Nigeria as he plans to build a refinery in Nigeria. Africa's richest man and owner of Dangote Group of companies is seeking a $3.5 billion loan to fund the oil refinery and other projects. Nigeria currently produce 445,000 barrels per day among four refineries. That is well below par.

Dangote to build refinery in Nigeria

“We need constant funding from one successful project to another, a very good funding mechanism. The loan will be for the refinery and other projects.” Vice President Sani Dangote said in an interview in Abuja.

Dangote plans to build the oil refinery in Nigeria’s southwest with a capacity of 400,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

“It’s going to take a while,” the vice president said by phone. “We’re still looking at the supply chain.”
''This will really help not only Nigeria but sub-Saharan Africa. There has not been a new refinery for a long time in sub-Saharan Africa'' added Aliko Dangote

Nigeria rely on subsidized imports for almost all of its fuel needs. A new refinery by a Nigerian would be welcomed and this would cut into profits made by European refiners and oil traders who would lose part of that lucrative market.

Woman had child perform sex with clients

Queensland Supreme Court judge David Boddice sentenced the 41-year-old to 9 years in jail Tuesday. The woman from Thailand who lives in Australia encouraged her 11-year-old daughter to become a business partner and encouraged her to have sex with service clients for more than seven years.
child sex with clients

The woman set up a massage business out of her home in Runcorn, which soon expanded into prostitution center. The child abuse first started when the child visited her mother in Australia while on a holiday in 2004. The 41-year-old woman is the first person in Australia to be convicted of child trafficking.

She also pleaded guilty to other offences, including child prostitution, indecent treatment of a child and having a sexual relationship with a child.

Prosecutor Todd Fuller SC told the court the woman brought the child permanently to Austalia when she turned 11, making her a partner in the $100, 000 a year business.

The woman told the daughter to exploit her clients with sex who paid her handsomely for services rendered.

"She regarded her daughter's virginity as a commodity that she could sell," Mr Fuller said.

The girl filed a complaint in 2011 to a family friend, who reported it to police.

'African Julius Caesar'

Like a military coup. Like corrupt political leaders. Caesar is an African tyrant assassinated by his rivals. The 400-year-old plays of William Shakespeare has been reinterpreted and re-envisioned to the African mentality. Royal Shakespeare Company produced a Julius Caesar set in contemporary Africa that was a hit at the World Shakespeare Festival.

African Julio Caesar Play

I love this interpretation of Shakespeare Caeser. The African drums by Nigerian Akintayo Akinbode, the British-African dialect, the costumes and concept. In fact, the play is very beautiful and thrilling. One of the best plays in decades.

Gregory Doran, the artistic director of Caeser, first got the idea of doing an African Julius Caesar when he met Nelson Mandela several years ago. Mandela quoted lines from Julius Caesar

Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard.
It seems to me most strange that men should fear;
Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.

Long live Caesar! An African Caeser.

Julius Caeser will make its American premiere later this year in theaters. The RSC's "Julius Caesar" plays at the Brooklyn Academy of Music through April 28th. It then moves to the Southern Theater in Columbus, Ohio, at the beginning of May.

Designer Michael Vale has wisely crafted a specifically nonspecific world: The costumes on this all-black cast represent a plethora of styles found on the African continent. Theo Ogundipe plays the soothsayer.

Lead poisoning among Nigerian children

Amost all Nigerian children inthe Northern Nigerian village of Zamfara are now believed to have lead poisoning. Thanks to International medical aid group 'Doctors Without Borders' for their services across Nigeria in the treatment of children with lead poisoning.

Nigeria Children with lead poisoning
Children suffering from Lead Poisoning
Almost a year next month, the group disclosed more than 4,000 children in a village northwest Nigeria have suffered from lead poisoning and more than 1,500 received care.

Those children were mostly from Bajega village in Zamfara state.

The Geneva-based Doctors Without Borders spends over $5 million yearly to treat people affected by lead poisoning which has killed more than 450 children in northern Nigeria since 2010.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a statement that lead poisoning in Zamfara was one of the "worst such crises in modern history."

The deaths, affecting children living in villages and gold mines arose from an unusually high concentration of lead in the region's soil, HRW said.

Nigeria minister of state for health
Min of State for Health, Muhammed Pate

The funds released for the treatment and prevention of lead poisoning is yet to be discovered. Lead poisoning treatment are complicated and could take up to 50 years to slowly get rid of.

The minister of state for health Dr Muhammed Pate calls it a 'man made disaster' and blames it on 'illegal mining'

A year later the government are slowly working their way to fix the situation by replacing the soil.

Nigeria to announce Death Penalty for Rape

Nigeria rape debate continues: Is death penalty the solution? Nigeria's minister for women affairs and social development is lobbying around for the court to pass capital punishment for rape crimes.
death penalty for rape

The minister, Hajiya Zainab Maina, said up to 10 cases of rape are reported in the country each week. "This has reached an alarming rate," she said

The Nigeria Police Watch reported about 1950 cases of rape in 2009. No report for 2010, 2011, 2012 or the current year.

As always in any country, there are numerous cases of unreported rapes. So I expect that number to be in ''Thousands.''

More than 75 per cent of the reported cases are rebuffed by the police and not investigated.

The current Nigerian laws call for the death penalty in cases of murder and I can't tell you how many people have been executed based on the law. Your guess is as good as mine. I once saw a cultist walking in the streets after he was convicted and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment Laws are rarely applied in Nigeria and passing a death penalty for rape should be highly considered after traffic, tax, murder, genocide, theft and corruption laws.

Boko Haram rejects Amnesty Plan

Nigeria's radical Islamist group Boko Haram has rejected the idea of any potential amnesty plan. In a statement obtained by AFP on Thursday, the leader of the group Abubakar Shekau, claimed his group had "not committed any wrong to deserve amnesty".
Nigeria's Boko Haram rejects Amnesty Plan

"Surprisingly, the Nigerian government is talking about granting us amnesty. What wrong have we done? On the contrary, it is we that should grant you pardon," he said, listing what he called the state's "atrocities" against Muslims.

The Hausa language audio recording was distributed by email in a manner consistent with previous Boko Haram messages, and the voice was similar to that of previous Shekau statements.

President Goodluck Jonathan last week formed a panel that includes senior military representatives and presidential sources to look at the possibility of offering amnesty to the Islamists, whose insurgency has left more than 3000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security services.

Both northern religious group including the Sultan of Sokoto and political leaders have been urging President Jonathan to grant an amnesty to the militants.

First Nigeria's steel ready for export

The first consignment produced by Nigeria's reborn steel industry is ready for export. The consignment is shipped and ready for export this month as African Foundries Limited, a foreign company operating in Nigeria, will begin export of steel to Ghana.

Nigeria's steel ready for export

African Foundries Limited, which has a production capacity of 500,000 tons of steel billets, has a state of the art continuous rolling facility, and is the only TMT producing mill in Nigeria, and its first export consignment is about five metric tons.

Sanjay Kumar, the company’s managing director, said exports would commence on April 27, 2013. “Today is a proud and pleasant moment, and we are showcasing our feat to announce the breakthrough, because we have started to produce for export,” he said, adding that the firm started with one five ton capacity induction furnace in 2010.

Kumar added that the company now has multiple furnaces of bigger capacity, along with a re-bar mill and a structural rolling mill, with current capacity at 500,000 tons per year. “With this plant and the two others in Ikorodu, Lagos and Suleja, in Niger state, we are targeting 1 million metric tons per year to be able to position ourselves for the 1.5 million metric tons Nigerians demand for steel.”

African Steel mill has 200,000 metric tons capacity while Abuja Steel mills in Suleja, which will be commissioned soon, has 150,000 metric tons per year capacity.

Kumar said the company's products are at par with what obtains in other parts of the world, adding that the main component is scraps sourced by about 5,000 otherwise unemployed youths.

“Big construction firms depend on us and we produce to their specifications,” he said. “The steel industry will develop better, if the import regime is favourable. Nigeria is one of the richest, especially in iron-ore, and the development of the industry will put the country at par with others in five years.”

The country’s feat is coming on the heels of federal government’s failure to develop the steel sector due to mismanagement and abandonment of its several steel companies.

The federal government, in 1971, established the Nigerian Steel Development Authority (NSDA) to focalise a steel plant. The agency was later dissolved and in its place were Ajaokuta Steel Project, Delta Steel Company, Jos Steel Rolling Company and Katsina Steel Rolling Company.

This is a welcome development
