ASUU four months strike, POLITICS

Has the Federal Government lost the plot? Lost trust, Shameless, Wasteful, Politics. ASUU strike is becoming a glass mirror for the next general elections.
Nasir Fagge, National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities has been put on the forefront. The blood pressure has risen to the greatest level of malignant hypertension. Yet, he is calm. He will not be swayed. If it took the government of Nigeria more than four years and yet to sign an agreement entered, Fagge will take as much time until the deplorable state of Nigerian universities and penniless salary structure is resolved.
ASUU strike

ASUU FOUR MONTHS strike

UNIVERSITY STATES IN NIGERIA

Why not? The minister of Aviation is embroiled in a N255 armored car scandal. More than 600 delegates on an extensively paid Israel trip with Nigerian tax payers money. The number of unprofitable ministries and agencies on the increase, yet the basic need for Education, Power supply and Security remains debatable.

When ASUU embarked on a strike in 2011 over the same demands, appeals from from concerned Nigerians to end the strike with the assurance that the matter would be looked into urgently was persuasive. He ended the strike then and two years later the same issue with even an unconcerned government remains.

Lesson Learned Is A Lesson Earned. When will Nigerians learn their lesson?

Fagge is different. You want to play politics lets play politics. Hopes of the current administration winning in the 2015 general elections has been narrowed since the strike. Mr Fagge stressed that rather than prevailing on ASUU to call off the strike, Nigerians should look at its demands and see their relevance to national development.

“Why is it that when issues like this come up, Nigerians will start begging ASUU to call off strike in the interest of the children and the country in general, rather than prevailing on government.

“I want to state here that we have a lot of respect and appreciate the concern of all Nigerians who have prevailed on ASUU to reconsider its stand and call off the strike.

“But sincerely, I think if people really care about this country and want to move it forward, they should refocus their thinking to government and prevail on them to implement the agreement and then we can start from there.

“The National Assembly had in the time past appealed to us to bend over and we did in the interest of the country– while negotiations lasted– but look at what is happening now”, he said.

US Senator Ted apologizes for Nigerian email scam

US Senator apologizes to Nigerians

A letter on Sunday from the US senator Ted Cruz t “regrets any misunderstanding” about the Nigerian email scam jokes and apologizes for the controversial comments.

The letter was signed by one of the aides of the Senator, Mr. David Sawyer, the South-East Texas Regional Director in his office.

The letter of apology reads in parts: “Earlier this week, Sen. Ted Cruz made a joke in which he used the term ‘Nigerian email scam.”
“Senator Cruz regrets that it is unfortunate that we’re living in a time where just about every joke can be misconstrued to cause offense to someone.”

“Cruz has never, nor would ever use a blanket term in a derogatory fashion against such a vibrant and integral part of our community. This usage was never directed to the Nigerian community as a whole.

“To the good people of Nigeria – a beautiful nation where my wife lived briefly as the child of missionaries – no offense was intended.

“I am fully appreciative of the range of mutual economic and security interests that make Nigeria an important friend to the United States,” Cruz said apologetically.

ASUU Strike, FOUR MONTHS AFTER: Where does it go from here?

ASUU strike in Nigeria, day 100 +, where does it go from here? The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said there is no going back on the already four-month-old strike except the federal government fully implements the agreement it reached with the union in 2009.
Q&A: ASUU strike in Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classrooms in the interest of their students.

He made the appeal at the inauguration of the College of Engineering Complex at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State.

Jonathan urged ASUU members to heed his appeal saying that whatever their grievances might be, keeping students out of school for four months was unpatriotic.

“I once again appeal to the entire membership of ASUU to pause and ponder on the adverse effect of their action on the future of the vibrant youths of this great nation.

“The collective destiny of tens of thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should not be held hostage to vagaries of labour disputes.

“As long as we are humans, as long as we are a developing society, this labour dispute must come up.

“I always say that even in the developed societies we hear about labour dispute; and there is no society, even the most developed, that has provided the facilities for every worker.

“Our security services, the Police, the Armed Forces, Navy, Air Force and para-military, intelligent services are also operating in an environment that is not the best.

“If all of us should go on long strike because our environment is not at its optimum, then definitely we can never get the Nigeria of our dream.

“So, let me use this unique opportunity that I am interfacing with our future leaders, our students, to plead with ASUU members.

“If it is a genuine strike keeping students out of classrooms for almost four months, by that they have demonstrated to everybody that they have a case.

“And if the strike is motivated by some other interests, they have also achieved that by keeping students out of schools for more than a semester,” he said.

Since July Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue had disclosed  to news correspondents  following hours of deliberation behind closed doors, the meeting agreed on major issues except the two, nothing inconclusive have been done.

“These are the outstanding issues, otherwise other issues have been agreed on and we believe that by next week we should be able to agree on all the issues and, probably, ASUU will call off the strike,’’ he said.

“If you go into our universities you will agree with me that there are a lot of infrastructure deficit; so, we have agreed that all the funding agencies will meet with ASUU,” he said.

The chairman of ASUU in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Comrade Prof Ike Odimegwu said, “Nigeria as a country has never had a shortfall in revenue since the 1980s, but the government keeps insisting that it has no money. We are aware that there is more than enough money.

Latest government strategy on ASUU Strike: Can it work?
In early October, the supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, disclosed that 80 per cent of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)’s demands had been met by Federal Government.

“The N400 billion they are demanding is not part of federal budget or Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention.
“And out of the N92 billion earned allowances demanded by ASUU, government has offered N30 billion to them for a start,’’ he said.

“We want to tell Nigerians that if the ASUU strike fails, there will be negative consequences for the Nigerian education sector. An average Nigerian will pay N200,000 as tuition in a federal university, and over 80 percent of parents will not be able to train their children in University.

ASUU strike, latest updates

“We are, therefore, calling on Nigerians to joins us and question the Nigerian government, and call them to place priorities right. Trillions have been allocated to build a centenary village, but here we can not meet the UNESCO approved 26 percent budget for education. We must tell the government that 8.2 percent budget for education is not enough”.

Saudi women arrested for driving. CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!

Several women arrested for violating driving ban. 14 women have been arrested who have driven in protest against the driving ban for women in Saudi Arabia. The women are said to have committed an act of civil disobedience.
Driving ban, Saudi women arrested

"I am too high-born to be propertied,
To be a secondary at control,
Or useful serving-man and instrument
To any sovereign state throughout the world.

Shakespeare and Henry Throreau adapted those words in his Civil disobedience essay.Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women it is forbidden to drive a car. This applies also for the increasing number of women who have obtained a driving license abroad.

The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch welcomes the campaign by the Saudi Arabian women drivers on Thursday.

"It's hard to believe that Saudi Arabia in the 21st Century women still prohibits driving a car, "said Middle East analyst at the organization Rothna Begum. It is high time to address the discrimination enshrined in the system; driving could pave the way for reforms. (Sda)

Prenup for Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

Should every marriage have a prenup? get the prenup, buddy. Is Kanye West smart enough to sign a prenuptial to protect his assets due to Kim Kardashian's track record with marriage is not too good.
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West Prenup aggreement

The fact is that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West plan to sign a prenuptial agreement.

TMZ reported Kardashian and West will sign a prenup to keep their assets separate and form a joint account for living expenses. While other reports have pegged West's net worth about $100 million and Kardashian's about $40 million, TMZ says, "[W]e're told Kim's actually worth more than Kanye."

Currently, West ranks at No. 59 on Forbes' "Celebrity 100" list. As of June 2013, he has made $20 million. Forbes notes that his new album and tour will certainly increase this amount.

Meanwhile, Forbes ranks Kardashian at No. 66. As of June 2013, she has made $10 million from her reality show and business ventures. However, this is much lower than what she made in 2012 from cash related to her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries. Another (made-for-TV?) wedding could be just the thing to boost that bank account back up.

On Thursday night, Kimye made their first public appearance since their engagement. They looked blissfully happy at Spago in Beverly Hills for the Dream for Future Africa Foundation Inaugural Gala, and Kardashian wasn't shy about flashing her 15-carat engagement ring for the paparazzi.

Woman sells virginity of 12 daughters

A woman and mother of 14 in Colombia tried to make ends meet by selling their daughters virginity for a couple hundred dollars.
mother sold daughters virginity

Margarita de Jesus Zapata Moreno, colombian, 45, was arrested this week together with a 51-year-old contractor who police believe impregnated one of the young daughters.

She broke down in tears when she stood in front of the cameras after being arrested in Bogota, the Colombian capital. The Bogota Metropolitan Police say Zapata sold the virginity of 12 daughters to much older men seeking to have sex with young virgins.

Authorities also say the suspect would begin selling her daughters to men as soon as the girls turned 12 years old. She charged anywhere between 300,000 and 400,000 Colombian Pesos ($160 to $212) for a virgin.

But Zapata strongly denies the accusation. Colombian authorities often show high-profile suspects to the media shortly after arresting them. When Zapata was standing in front of the cameras Wednesday, one of the reporters shouted a question to her: "Did you prostitute your daughters?" She answered: "No, my darling."

The investigation took more than a year to complete because the only witness willing to testify, the 14-year-old girl, now 16, disappeared, apparently because she feared her mother would kill her for going to the police.

After she reappeared, she also told authorities about a man who had sex with her and got her pregnant.

Police arrested a 51-year-old man who investigators say fathered the son of the girl who was 14 years old when the baby was born. The suspect declined to comment at Wednesday's police presentation.

Police are asking the rest of the daughters to provide more information about this case. "Those who are watching or listening to us, we would like to ask them to come to the police so that they give us information about transpired in this case," Melendez said.

Police investigators say Zapata also forced her older daughters to drink alcohol and do drugs. Some ended up working as prostitutes and are missing, police said.

Police say those two arrests are only the beginning. Investigators say they will also build cases against the men who were having sex with these minors.

According to authorities, only two of Margarita de Jesus Zapata Moreno's 14 children were not forced into prostitution. They were the two youngest -- an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl -- and they have been placed in the custody of a Colombian government child protection agency.

Ted Cruz's 'Nigerian Email Scammers' Joke Angers Nigerians

Ted Cruz’s Nigerian email scammers joke is not that funny. A Nigerian-American organization wants the Texas Republican to apologize for comments he made Monday.
Ted Cruz's 'Nigerian Email Scammers' Joke

“You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately,” Cruz said at a gathering with supporters in Houston, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website,” he joked.

But the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, also known as CANAN, isn’t laughing. The group blasted Cruz, calling his comments distasteful and disparaging.

“Cruz has maligned all hardworking, decent and outstanding Nigerian-Americans who add value and bring goodwill to their different communities, especially in Texas, with the largest concentration of Nigerian-Americans in this country,” the group said in a statement released Thursday.

The Nigerian ambassador to the United States also wants an apology from the senator.

“We deplore the statement, and we demand an apology, and we demand it be withdrawn,” Adefuye said.

“We consider it an insult that a senator who should be representing the people of his state could turn against some of his very own constituents in what is clearly a reckless and offensive remark,” CANAN said.

The Only Winners In the ASUU Strike

ASUU Strike

Has the ASUU Strike damaged the reputations of Education in Nigeria? No doubt, It has. The majority of Nigerians are fed up with the ongoing four months strike. The only winners in this case is Education, the losers are the federal government and ASUU.
First, we all must understand that the strike is not about ASUU or the federal government. It is about Education. How do we improve the dull state of our institution? How do we believe in a better Nigeria when the federal government cannot implement its signed agreement? The strike is great for Asuu to assume its powers but bad for a malfunctioning government.

Few grudges here and there that the Academic Union of Universities ASUU is becoming too selfish and self centered for the ongoing strike.

To address the root etiology of the strike, government must, without delay, honor the agreement it signed with ASUU and make available the funds. According to ASUU, the strike is to register the displeasure of university teachers over government’s failure to honor a Memorandum of Understanding it signed on January 24, 2012 to comprehensively implement the 2009 Agreement signed by both parties. The main thrust of that agreement include: funding for infrastructure; university autonomy and academic freedom; improved staff welfare and condition of service. These conditions are not for ASUU but to improve the advancement of Education in Nigeria. So far ASUU has failed to persuade the government to do so.

It is a lack of integrity on government’s part to renege on its promise. One of the hallmarks of good governance is integrity; and this is an all-important virtue required of those who claim to superintend such an important sector as education. The excuse that the government cannot afford to adequately fund university education is dishonest in the face of the unconscionable pillaging of state funds by public officials. It is a shameful representation of the leadership quality of those in the corridors of power in this administration

Ondo State offers free buses for school students

free buses to school
Ondo State Government officials on Sunday unveiled eight free buses to help convey students and pupils to and from school free of charge.

The gesture was part of the Dr Olusegun Mimiko’s administration’s Free School Shuttle policy where buses are provided for students in the state to convey them to school free of charge.

The people of the Nigerian state upon hearing of the development trooped out to usher in the new buses which were delivered to them on behalf of the Governor by his Chief of Staff , Dr Kola Ademujimi.

Traditional rulers, parents and students alike upon sighting the buses showered praises on Governor Mimiko for a promise kept.

The state’s Commissioner for Transport, Otunba Nicholas Tofowomo said the buses were part of Governor Mimiko’s electoral promises to the people of the town.

He added that the gesture will take off from parents the financial burden of transporting their wards to and from school.

Informing that the government will still do more to improve education of the students in the town, Dr Ademujimi said as part of the gestures, the Governor will commission a mega school in the town on Tuesday.

N255m Car Scandal: More trouble for Stella Oduah

Nigeria's aviation minister Stella Oduah faces more troubles after the official was involved in a scandalous purchase of two armour-plated BMW vehicles at an inflated cost of N225 million. She could face a resignation and up to 10 years in jail.
 Stella Oduah

The contract was not listed in the budget by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, the agency compelled by the minister to make the purchase; and was not listed by the Federal Airport Authority, FAAN or Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA.

The ministry’s own budget too, had no plan to purchase any car for the minister, or other officials.

Spending public funds on unbudgeted projects attracts three years in jail and a fine of N100, 000 the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences law stipulates.

Also, contracts involving public funds without due procurement processes- basically open advertising and bidding- draws a minimum of five years, and a maximum of 10 years in jail, the Public Procurement law says.

A spokesperson for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission, Folu Olamiti, said the anti-graft body would make its position on the matter known later. A representative for the Bureau of Public Procurement, said the “law was clear” on this case. He did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak.

After its initial denial of a contract that has shocked a nation with majority of its population poor, the ministry of aviation, on Sunday, admitted that two reinforced BMW sedans had been purchased for Mrs Oduah at the total cost of N255 million, a sum enough to deliver at least five of such cars.

Joe Obi, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, said the cars were to protect Mrs Oduah from “imminent threats” bred by the minister’s purported radical reforms in the aviation industry, the Punch newspaper reported.

“When she came on board as the minister, she inherited a lot of baggage in terms of concession and lease agreements in the sector, which were clearly not in the interest of the government and people of Nigeria,” Mr Obi said.

“And so, she took bold steps and some of these agreements were reviewed and some were terminated, and these moves disturbed some entrenched interests in the sector, and within this period, she began to receive imminent threats to her life; therefore, the need for the vehicles.”

Mr. Obi did not elaborate on the processes leading to the procurement of the cars, whether it followed due process or not; or why the minister chose to mandate an agency under her supervision to deliver the cars, or still, why the contract was directly awarded to Coscharis Motors-the company that supplied the cars- in breach of government procurement laws.

Edo State has introduced the death penalty for anybody convicted of kidnapping in the state.

The law, which amended the Kidnapping Prohibition Act 2009, also prescribed the death penalty for those who aid and abet kidnappers, Governor Adams Oshiomhole told reporters after he signed the bill in the state capital of Benin on Friday.

"This law is signed in good faith; the government has the will to implement it in totality, no special task-force or tribunal will be constituted to try defaulters," Oshiomhole said.

He said the government was concerned about the increase of kidnapping in the state just as it was aware of the pain kidnappers had inflicted on their victims and families.

"This administration has taken necessary steps to effectively police all the security flash points in the state as we have discovered that the major criminals are migrants who visit the state and escape after committing crimes," he said.
