Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi ll has been appointed as the new Chancellor of the University of Benin(UNIBEN) by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Minister of Education said the appointment of Emir Sanusi followed the recent directive by President Goodluck to the ministry to review the appointment of chancellors of universities. "On the recommendation of my humble self, President Goodluck Jonathan approved your appointment as the new Chancellor of the University of Benin. "This appointment is an honour done to Kano, myself and the Emir who is the father of all of us."
Sanusi stressed the need for the government to ensure that quality education is given to the youth to enable them to contribute their quota towards the development of the country. "Education should be given the priority attention, it deserves to empower the youth to enable them to be self-reliant and contribute towards the development of the country.
"We should not mind the number of universities but the quality of education the universities give to our youth to make them self reliant." Sanusi, who commended the Federal Government for finding him worthy of the appointment, promised to contribute his quota towards the development of the university.
The newly appointed Chancellor of the University of Benin said the University of Benin had received his good attention when he was the governor of the Central Bank saying he was behind the construction of the bridge that linked the two campuses of the University.
He however stated that the agitation for the construction of the bridge was mounted dating back to the days when the late Lamido of Adamawa was the Chancellor saying it was a struggle that had taken the authorities of the University four decades to actualize.
