Woolwich murder trial: Adebolajo and Adebowale in Court

The Old Bailey jury saw the weapons used to kill Lee Rigby at the hearing of the Woolwich murder trial. The prosecution, Richard Whittam QC said that one of the men accused of murdering the soldier, Michael Adebolajo, was captured on CCTV on 21 May, the day before the attack, visiting a branch of Argos in Lewisham, south London.

He drove there in a Vauxhall Tigra to run over the soldier in a suburban street.

The jury was shown pictures of receipts recovered by police from the car after the attack: a knife sharpener was bought for £9.99 from the Argos store and £44.98 was paid in cash for a set of five Taylors Eye Witness knives in a block.

Just after 8am on the day of the attack, Adebolajo was seen driving the car in the area around his home before filling up with petrol at a local shop. He told the assistant he did not have any money or identification and, according to Whittam, offered his phone as security. He told the shop assistant not to answer if it rang.

Adebolajo went home and returned. He paid for the petrol then headed towards the address of his co-accused, Michael Adebowale, at around 9.30am. The court heard that the two men were together for the rest of the morning before setting off for Woolwich.

The court was shown video footage and images of the pair driving around the area for at least an hour before the attack. Rigby was returning to his barracks in Woolwich after spending the morning at a recruitment fair at the Tower of London. The soldier's mother, Lyn Rigby, left the court in tears when jurors heard they were about to see her son's final moments.

Dressed in a blue Help for Heroes hooded top with a camouflage backpack slung over his shoulder, Rigby was shown passing a pub and council offices as he walked the short distance from Woolwich Arsenal Docklands Light Railway station. Instead of turning into his barracks, he crossed the road.

Without warning, the jury heard, Adebolajo drove the Tigra straight at Rigby. There were gasps as CCTV footage showed the car ploughing into Rigby from behind, lifting the 25-year-old onto the bonnet and windscreen before it crashed at up to 40mph. His unconscious body landed two feet in front of the car, the court heard.

"What unfolded after that was shocking to those who observed it," Whittam told jurors.

After a short delay Adebolajo and Adebowale got out of the car and set about an "horrific, frenzied attack," the jury was told.

"The driver was carrying a cleaver in his right hand. He knelt down by Lee Rigby and took hold of his hair.

"He then repeatedly hacked at the right side of his neck just below the jaw line. He was using considerable force, bringing his hand into the air each time before he struck."

Bailey saw Adebolajo hack nine times into Rigby's neck, the jury heard. Another witness, Gary Perkins, saw Adebolajo "sawing at the neck of Lee Rigby with a machete" while Adebowale was "trying to cut bits of the body away". He said the attack was like "a butcher attacking a joint of meat".

Whittam told the jury that in police interviews Adebolajo said his name was Mjahid Abu Hamza and added: "Your people have gone to Afgahnistan and raped and killed our women. I am seeking retribution. I wouldn't stoop so low as to rape and kill women."

He is alleged to have said: "I thank the person who shot me because it is what Allah would have wanted," adding "I love Allah more than my children."

Adebolajo refused to sign the notes of this conversation, Whittam said, claiming his words had been taken out of context. The next day, 23 May, Adebolajo made more comments to police, the jury heard. He is alleged to have said: "My intention was never to harm civilians. There were women and children around. My intention was to hurt military only."

Referring to Rigby, the crown alleged Adebolajo said: "He was in his kit, in his uniform coming in and out of the barracks."

ASUU 150 days (5 Months) Strike

ASUU 150 days (5 Months) Strike

ASUU nationwide strike has “inflicted unnecessary damage” to Nigeria and its students: needless to say it has damaged education’s credibility around the world.

Efforts to reopen universities to students under the 5 months strike has been fruitless. Deliberations upon deliberations, finger-pointing and blame game between ASUU vs its members, Government vs ASUU and Students vs ASUU plus Government has taken the toil to 150 days.

The Nigerian people are completely fed up with ASUU and the Federal government of Nigeria. In a time like this when our economy is strong, we have allowed education to suffer so badly due to yet another self-inflicted crisis that set our country back.

Osas eye wrote last month on ASUU Strike, FOUR MONTHS AFTER: Where does it go from here? but today, this article is about a five month strike out of a 12 month calender year: Unbelievable leadership, Shameful for a country with so much wealth at its disposal. Our students deserved better! Nigeria deserves more than this chronic ongoing ASUU strike.

How it all started?
July 1, 2013: ASUU began a nationwide strike over alleged Federal Government’s refusal to implement the agreement between it and the union over unpaid entitlements.

August 6: The Federal Government team led by Benue State Governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam had a failed meeting with ASUU officials at the office of the SGF as the teachers insisted on the implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement.

August 18: Meeting between striking university lecturers and the Federal Government ended without a resolution of the crisis.

August 20: Jonathan met with the Federal Government’s officials engaged in the negotiation with ASUU at the Presidential Villa, decided to lead another negotiation with the leadership of the union.

August 20: FG approves N400 billion for infrastructural development in Nigerian universities.

Aug 20: ASUU threatened to pull out from the Presidential Committee on the Implementation of the Committee of Needs Assessment of Nigeria public Universities, CNANU.

August 23: The Federal Government reached agreement with ASUU to deploy N100 billion for the provision of infrastructure on campuses of 61 universities covered in the needs assessment .

August 28: National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the union’s leadership to resolve their differences or face serious consequences.

October 24: Senate mandated its leadership to wade into ASUU strike by meeting the Federal Government and the ASUU executives

November 4: Senate President, Senator David Mark met with the leadership of ASUU, but no resolution to end strike.

November 5: President Goodluck Jonathan in 13-hour marathon meeting with the leadership of ASUU in conjunction with representatives of the NLC and TUC.

November 12: Prof. Festus Iyayi, former ASUU President died on his way for ASUU meeting in Kano.

November 23: ASUU NEC members agreed that before calling off its strike government should pay the four-month salary arrears being owed varsity lecturers.

November 26: Management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki resolved to reopen the school after ASUU fails to call off strike.

New York City officials had warned earlier that winds could force the parade's iconic balloons to fly lower than normal -- or not to fly at all. But on Thursday morning, the gust died down. The sky brighter and streets crowded with millions of spectators.

Nigeria drop three places to 36th in the Fifa world rankings, despite winning the African cup of nations and qualifying for the world cup 2014.

The fall of three places under Stephen Keshi is meaningless after Nigeria became the first African nation to qualify for Brazil..

The ranking table on the world football body’s released on Thursday showed that Nigeria has 710 points, 14 points less against the 724 points it had with the last ranking in October.

The latest ranking places Nigeria fourth in Africa, behind Algeria, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, who have 800, 849 and 918 points, respectively.

FG gives ASUU One week ultimatum to call off strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been given a one week (7 days) ultimatum by the Federal government of Nigeria to call off the ongoing strike, reports newspapers and blogs.
ASUU issued ultimatum to call off strike

The directive according to the reports was given today, in Abuja by the acting Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike while speaking with journalists. This sounds like a hoax. Incomplete reports. No quotes. No correspondence. Unverified reports with no source to damage the relationship between ASUU and the Government. The news should be retracted from all sites until proven otherwise. This is another case of poor journalism in Nigeria.

The union has been on strike since July 1 over the non Implementation of a 2009 agreement with the federal government.

The reports also added that the acting Minister Wike had described ASUU's counter demand as ,”outrageous.” What demands?

ASUU and its delegates is said  to meet with President Jonathan on the decisions reached at its NEC meeting next week before any announcement will be made concerning the 5months old strike.

The Rise of APC movement in Nigeria: a Challenge to rulling PDP

In this definitive period ahead of the gubernatorial election in Nigeria analysis of the APC Party movement is RAPIDLY gaining strength. Osas eye examines the APC Party phenomenon.
The Rise of APC Party

Tinubu emphasized earlier this year that a new party would emerge from the existing three leading opposition political parties. Tinubu said: ''The merger thing is coming on fine. In every political environment you have hills and valleys. There are sincere people, our commitment to merger is not for us, it is for the country. It is not for today only, it is for tomorrow and the future of our youth, the liberty and freedom of the journalism profession.''

''We have to change Nigeria for better. And the only way we could that is come together under one platform.''
“We are in the SouthWest, our political opponents would want us hemmed in, they want us restricted to South West.''

On the eve of that statement, the APC movement was formed. Since the launch of the ALL Progressive Congress party, the ruling party has struggled within. The word crisis has been used multiple times, but a new opposition is here for Nigeria.

Fast forward to November, months after the merger, the Punch magazine, the newly installed winner of newspaper of the year recently reported in an article titled PDP’s loss, APC’s gain

In September, President Jonathan fired nine cabinet ministers from his ruling party amid serious divisions in the governing party.

Five aggrieved governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party defected to the All Progressives Congress on the PDP’s fortunes as the nation braces for the 2015 elections.

In August this year, ex-presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, broke with the ruling PDP party to join the movement in a bid for re-election in the 2015 presidential polls.

The new party has become a main opposition.

The APC now controls 17 states with 33 million registered voters, compared to the PDP’s run of 15 states with only 26 million voters.

Sir Victor Uwaifo: Musician, Artist and Inventor

Victor Uwaifo is a renowned Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor, professor and musical instrument inventor, born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria in 1941. He is famous for his Joromi, "Guitar Boy and Mami water" song.
Sir Victor Uwaifo

November's Profiling Nigerians takes osas eye to Sir Victor Uwaifo: an Iconic rare gem. He studied Fine and Applied Arts in University of Benin, specialising in Sculpture and also Graphic Arts at Yaba College of Technology. "I made distinctions, I made first class honours" he said.
Sir Victor Uwaifo Musician, Artist and Inventor
In early 2,000,  Sir Victor Uwaifo became the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Edo state.

He grew up in Benin and as a child, delved into so many activities; sports, story-telling, shooting catapults, making cages and even making toys like airplanes and cars

"I was always a protagonist, I always led while others followed. That leadership quality was always there. Not only that, my contemporaries looked up to me to show them the way because I also came from a family of the upper-middle class. My father used to have one of the first cars in Benin City then. It was called Stood Baker, an American Ford."
Sir Victor Uwaifo Guitar boy, Mermaid story, Artist and Inventor

How it all started

"I made the first guitar for myself before I was 12 years old. The skills I aqcuired from making cages and other artworks helped me in making the guitar from plywood. I used bicycle spokes for the frets and trap ropes for strings. Few months after I made it, I ran into some of these palm wine bar guitarists. I had to offer them a jug of palm wine before they allowed me to play their guitar."

"I acquired my own guitar at about 12 years of age. It was a Spanish box guitar. I took a few lessons. They thought me this or that, and I took it up from there. My brothers also thought me the rudiment or music, particularly the late chief magistrate. He was a church organist, so he could read music. He bought me a few books on the rudiment of music. From there, I started reading and teaching myself and taking courses by correspondence."

"Then we found what we called the Uwaifo quartet in which I was a guitarist. My sister was there, my late brother was there and my brother who is serving in the Supreme ourt, Justice Uwaifo was also one of us. Mr. Emmanuel Fadaka used to come from Ibadan to come and record us because that was the only radio station in the whole of Western Region by then. So our voices were heard on radio at Ibadan. But I made my first album around 1960. I was already in Lagos then."

Music career of Victor Uwaifo
"When I was in secondary school, I played with some bands like that of Victor Ola Iya, and finally, I anchored with E. C. Arinze for about five years. It was there I really acquired the knowledge of orchestration and the knowledge of music management. We were stationed in Kakado, a very popular night club in Lagos by then. There was so much discipline in the band."

"While still in the band, I started recording my own songs, and I called the group The Pick Ups, because we picked them up from different places and we went to the studio to record. Then when I disengaged from E. C. Arinze, the same year, I formed a band with the late Stephen Osadebe and Freddy Coker. We called ourselves the Central Moderneers and we had a band in Central Hotel, not far from Kakado. We lasted only for a year before I went solo and by then I was working for NTS, now NTA. That was in 1963. It was in 1965 that I made a hit. By 1966, I resigned and went professional, and by 1967, there was a follow up of another great hit, and others followed."

Is it really true that your encounter with a mermaid at the Lagos beach is reason that no one has been able to match your skill at the guitar?

No, mammy water will not give you the skill, it will only probably inspire you to do more. That encounter with the mermaid at the Lagos barbeach gave birth to the song Guitar Boy, “If you see mammy water oh, never, never you run away,” that is the shortest lyric ever in the music industry, and it has remained evergreen till today.

Still on the encounter with the mermaid, considering your age at the time, how did you feel that night?

Well, I was looking for inspiration, so I used to go to the beach to cool off at the bar beach after close of work at NTA. At that time, television work was a night business, not in the day as we have it today. By the time we finished, to go back to the Mainland through the Carter Bridge, the only bridge available then, was not easy. So I used to go to the Barbeach which was just a stone’s throw away from the NTA. That was how the idea came into me to go for inspiration a the beach.

But that particular night, I stayed late into the night, I was alone, and I noticed that the waves were advancing beyond the normal point to my direction. I was forced to move my camp bed backward. I did that about two times, not knowing that an unexpected esoteric visitor was going to visit me. From a distance, I saw a glittering object advancing towards me. I looked, but I didn’t quite comprehend what I saw until it came very close to me. That was when I tried to run away, and then the voice came: “Guitar boy” and I screamed, “Eh!” That gave birth to the pull of string on my guitar. Nobody has ever pulled guitar string like that before that time. So I decided I must interpret that screaming on the guitar strings. So when you hear those rattles of my guitar, it is my response to the call. It was like a call and an answer, and it is still fresh in my mind, I still feel the nostalgia of that encounter.

Can you tell us what the mermaid told you?

That was: “If you see mammy water, never, never you run away, Victor Uwaifo.” and it disappeared.

Will you say you have attained fulfillment in your life?

You can see it. It is radiating all over me. I said it before that I am a fulfilled man. You might have money but not fulfilled. You can also be a popular musician but not fulfilled.

I have gone round the periphery of life, from music to academic, to art, to sculpture, to painting, to creating a museum that is different from all other museums. I am also an architect and an engineer. I made that car that you see outside there and drove it to Abuja about 20 years ago. So there is that fulfillment.

Greeks self Injects HIV To Claim Benefits

Greeks self Injects HIV To Claim Benefits

WHO retracts the report that Greeks Self destruct to claim monthly benefit. An increasing number of Greeks were reported to have injected themselves with HIV to claim hundreds of euros in benefits. The World Health Organisation (WHO), which investigated the impact of the economic downturn on countries across Europe, said HIV rates had risen "significantly" in the debt-ridden country.

It said about half of new HIV infections were self-inflicted, allowing people to receive benefits of €700 (£585) per month, as well as faster admission onto drug rehabilitation programmes.

Prostitution also increased, "probably as a response to economic hardship", it said, adding that Greeks were less likely than they were in 2007 to visit a doctor or dentist when they were feeling unwell.

Figures from the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as Keelpno, showed the HIV infection rate in Greece has nearly tripled in 10 years - up from 3.9 in every 100,000 people in 2003 to 10.9 in 2012.

There were 1,180 HIV infections last year compared with 434 in 2003, while the disease was transmitted through injections in around a tenth (8.9%) of cases in 2012.

The majority of infections (53%) occur among Greek men aged 25-39.

A spokesman for the WHO said: "These adverse trends in Greece pose a warning to other countries undergoing significant fiscal austerity, including Spain, Ireland and Italy.

Taylor Swift's 'Dress Show Stealer' Not Stunning, Awful.

Not Stunning: Taylor Swift's Dress

Taylor Swift's AMA dress show Stealer...I don't know. I expected more when I read the headlines this morning that Taylor Swift's minidress stole the American music award show held last night. Sorry, not a fan of the dress. Some say it's a clubbin type dress and others call it an outfit for ice skates. All I know, is that the dress is not a show stealer and I don't think ''stunning'' should be used either.
Stunning: Taylor Swift's Dress AMA awards

The 23-year-old country singer attended the award show with her ex Harry Styles in a shinning sparkling Julien Macdonald dress, Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Swift presented the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist to Justin Timberlake before taking to the stage to accept the award for Best Country Album for "Red."

ASUU agrees to suspend strike, on three conditions

ASUU suspend strike
ASUU agrees to suspend strike, under three (3) conditions according to multiple reports. The Academic Staff Union of University have agreed to end the five-month old strike, if the federal government says yes to three of its conditions.

These conditions will be made known to President Goodluck Jonathan today and if all parties come to agreement, the strike will be called off.

ASUU has forbidden its local chapters and zonal chairman from talking to the media, until the end of the session. Osas eye learned that ASUU's conditions to end the strike are:

•Commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the pact which is the cause of the ongoing strike;

•Immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimization; and

•A written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years.

The source said: “Our leaders are meeting with the President on Monday to table these conditions. Once the President accepts these three terms, the strike will be called off.

“In principle, members voted about 60-40 per cent to call off the strike, but they added a caveat – that ASUU leaders should extract a commitment (signed and sealed) from the President.”

John F Kennedy: The end of a dream

"It's more of an aura than his political achievements that remain," recently wrote the New York Times. Much of the 1063 days of the presidency of John F. Kennedy has remained unsettled - but the myth remains.
memorial concert for JFK at St. Matthew's Cathedral

Many political observers look at disillusionment with Kennedy's term of office: he had internal and foreign policy made a lot - but achieved little.

"Kennedy gave great hope this optimism across America, this ability for America to open new adventure that is his inheritance," said Marvin Kalb of the Brookings Institution, ''a think tank in Washington, more friendly'' and addeds: "I would hope we would see more of that today. "

Nevertheless, even the biggest skeptic can the magic of the 'what if' hardly escape that still connects with John F. Kennedy, who makes him so attractive to generations of admirers. Kristin also Donowan, an elderly lady in a memorial concert at the participating Washington St. Matthew's Cathedral, where the funeral Mass for Kennedy was read 50 years ago, has succumbed to the spell. She remembers a bright, inspiring time of new beginnings with a young president and a family out of a picture book.
"For a brief moment there was Camelot (The legend of King Arthur and his court Kennedy's favorite story His wife Jackie was trying to project this myth for the presidency -. Editor's note) It was a wonderful time in our history. . His death traumatized the entire nation., the people sat for hours in front of the television. Churches were crowded. "
John F KennedyThe magic that Kennedy left behind is still evident today

Andrew Craft, who came with his friends to the memorial concert, Kennedy did not live to. The young man goes into raptures: "For me personally, he is an icon he is a role model to which you can look up.". An elderly man tries to derive his enthusiasm for Kennedy rational. "It's more of an image than what he has actually done.'s Image was fantastic for me as a young man who came straight from college. He was an inspiration for us to just let the conservative period of 50 years behind us . Times changed and he represented das. "

Dallas, 22 November 1963

In Dallas, the doctor Ronald Jones, one of the first physicians, after the Kennedy assassination administered first aid in the operating room alive. In an interview with DW, he raises as a biblical narrative: "I was sitting in the cafeteria after a medical treatment, it was November 22, 1963, five years after my medical training I received the signal, immediately call the office.. . and I went to the phone on the wall of the cafeteria and called: '. Dr. Jones, the President was shot you take him to the emergency room and just prepare everything,' "he heard at the other end of the line.

Jones has told this story many times. But when he comes to the place that he and his colleagues need to realize after more than eight minutes of countless attempts to revive the death of President Kennedy, his voice trembling, even 50 years after this experience. It was a dramatic experience, but also for the people in the U.S. and around the world not only for him and the doctors of the Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

"We all realized that he was dead," Jones explains. "And I think Mrs. Kennedy did., You probably already knew that he was dying, when she arrived at Parkland Hospital because she had held him all the time in the limo."

Moving images when the Pontiff gripped his arms were seen around the world. "It was like being in paradise. He did not stop to think whether to hug or not, "Riva said in an interview with the Daily Mail. The brave man described that when the Pope touched him, his heart beat so hard he thought he would die. "No contagion, but he did not know. I just stroked across the face, and when it did I only felt love. " Riva recalled: "He left the altar to visit the sick. He hugged me without a word, but sometimes you can say more without saying anything. "

The new photos of Nigeria's most beautiful transgender

A Nigeria transgender had decided to share his story and appeal to people to stop the hate towards transgenders like him. The man, now simply identified as Miss Sahhara has claimed that he was abused and jailed in Nigeria for being a transgénder.

In an article published yesterday to mark the Transgénder Day of Remembrance, she talked about how depressed she felt and how she even attempted suicide.

Hear her, and see more photos below:
Nigeria's most beautiful transgender

“I am standing in front of the mirror looking at my reflection. Tears of joy trickle down my rouged cheek before going on stage.

I am in tears because I just can’t believe how realistic my dreams have become. I am a woman! Living my life freely. Accepted and respected for my achievements as a model and a performer.

My fellow transgéndered sisters and brothers paved this way for me. They fought for acceptance, understanding and respect. Some died while fighting for what they believed in and others fell before their time due to hate, rejection and society’s unfairness. Every single story gave me strength to fight on and never to give up.

I wish I could tell the younger me who tried to commit suicide twice that life gets better and dreams come true.

I did not imagine life could be this amazing many years ago after being released from a horrid Nigerian prison for being different. Then all I could think was I could die in this prison and no one will know or care.

Being imprisoned felt justifiable, considering I was being punished for being ‘gay’ – something they assumed due to my feminine features and mannerisms.

I wasn’t gay, I am a woman born differently due to natural defects. What I felt did not match my outward appearance, Being assigned male at birth doesn’t make me a man or a woman, nobody was born a man or a women, you develop into your preferred gender as you grow up. For me that gender was female. I was born male but my brain, gestures, features and carriage functioned as female.

Growing up and not knowing what was happening to my body made me confused and lost. I couldn’t discuss it with my family because my femininity was frowned on due to religion and I could not talk to my friends because they would not understand what I was going through. I found solace in music and dreams.

I dreamt of being free to be myself, free of insults, free of judgment and free from harassment.

That freedom came when I moved to the United Kingdom, finding girls like me gave me hope of not being alone in my journey of self-discovery.

found out what I went through growing up in Nigeria was quite common with transgéndered people. Having freedom, acceptance and knowledge are the key most important elements to a successful transition.

Knowing I am not alone in my struggles helped me to reevaluate my views on life and how I should go about my transition wisely. I researched my transition and reconciled the conflicting emotions involved in the process of accepting myself as the woman I am.

It is a lonely world during transition, as your body changes so do your emotions, which leads the mind into the darkest path in life. If the chemicals are not professionally controlled, you can feel suicidal due to rejection from loved ones and society.

In life perfection doesn’t existent, but for me having the freedom to be my true self feels almost perfect. As a black transgéndered woman I am faced with many daily challenges such as transphobia, a complicated love life, poor career prospects and racism. But when I remember my life history, these challenges become water under the bridge.

That is why I will always remember those who built this foundation for freedom and knowledge. Also those who never got the chance to enjoy the acceptance we have achieved so far.

Transgénder Day of Remembrance today (20 November) is particularly import to me because I have lost close friends to suicide and have seen many more wishing to commit suicide as a final fix to their gender dilemma and rejection by society.

The media is silent on the subject of transphobia and the effects it has on young transgéndered people of today, because they don’t see transgéndered people as ‘normal’ members of our community.

Remembering my fallen friends helps me to keep their memories alive. It also encourages me to carry on the fight to be respected, understood and accepted for whom I am.

I dream of a world where we are given some sort of understanding and tolerance to live peacefully as able, intelligent fellow human beings who make positive contributions to society.

Transgéndered people are human too. We are your brothers, your sisters, your children, your friends and your lovers. Stop the hate! “

Igbo New Yam Festival Celebrated in London (Photos)

Igbo New Yam Festival Celebrated in London
2013 is a landmark year for ICSN Iri Ji or New Yam Festival. Last sunday was the 15th year anniversary. This year’s Iri Ji Festival was not just solely about honouring our culture, and continuing the legacy of the New Yam festival, but also about paying homage, and respecting the lineage of our unique organisation ICSN, hence this year’s titled " ICSN Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival 2013 & 15 Year Anniversary Celebration
The ICSN Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival 2013 & 15 Year Anniversary Celebration
ICSN(Igbo Cultural Support Network) is the UK’s largest networking organisation for young adults of Nigerian Igbo descent. The organisation currently has a membership of over 1,500 members and is growing.
The London Borough of Hackney was blessed for a second year in a row. Having still not gotten over the beautiful showcase of Igbo cultural pride we displayed last year, the Petchey Academy was yet again the venue for another splendid projection of the Igbo community London.

In our towns back in Nigeria there is usually an Iroko Drum, in every village that when hit summons the whole community to stop what they are doing, and congregate at a specific place to hear special announcements. In this case the drum of ICSN on the evening of Saturday 19th October was struck, and judging by the many that attended, the echo off the drum could clearly be heard, all over London, the whole of the UK, and even Nigeria.

Over 500 people attended this year, the most we have ever had.

•    The arrival of John Okafor (Mr Ibu) really added something extra to the occasion. It brought home how far the ICSN has reached. He gave us a stint of his comedy, and showed off his dancing skills.

No Iri Ji Festival would be complete without the staple Iri Ji Festival foods; Yam Porridge, Powdered Yam, Fried Yam, Boiled Yam. We also did not forget the staple function dishes. Jollof/Fried Rice, chicken, beef, moi moi, plantain, fish, tripe, and pepper soup.

Once the main festivities were done, it was Dance Dance Dance till late night.

Woman slept for more than a year with husband's corpse

A woman in Anderlecht slept with her husband's corpse for more than a year. A medical examiner Philippe Boxho, hardly surprised by the news said " These are people who have big psychological problems or the elderly who suffer from dementia. For some, they do not realize that the other is dead. For others, they refuse to see him dead, a like a denial of pregnancy. "
Woman slept with husband's corpse

Marcel, 73 years old, no longer pay the rent for the apartment since November 2012 after he was hospitalized for a chronic illness. And when he died, his wife named Ghita and 69 years old, refused to admit the evidence and claimed that her husband was hospitalized. She kept the corpse of her husband for more than a year to herself in the room.

Last Friday, when the owner showed up at their home to throw Ghita out of his property, he discovered the body of Marcel, a mummy lying on the bed and the dog lying in the kitchen.

The neighbors had been alerted by the smell foul, but they thought the couple piled garbage in the apartment.
Prosecutors in Brussels said that investigation was opened " to shed light on this matter "and that the body will be autopsied.

Meeting Updates: ASUU votes to continue

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will hold its postponed National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday to decide whether or not to continue the five month old strike.
ASUU meeting updates

A top official of ASUU disclosed this in a telephone interview on Sunday. He was, however, not certain if the NEC will still be held at the Bayero University, Kano where it was initially proposed to hold.

The leadership of the union postponed the scheduled Kano NEC meeting following the demise of one its key members, Festus Iyayi, who died last Tuesday in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Kano for the postponed NEC meeting.

The source noted that the union members are still grieved and are pre-occupied with the burial arrangement of the late Professor of Business Administration, who died along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in an accident caused by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.

Meanwhile, Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, also at the weekend led a delegation of government on a condolence visit to the residence of the late academician in Benin City.

Wike assured that the Federal Government would diligently implement all the agreements it reached with ASUU in the course of the negotiations with President Goodluck Jonathan.

They also visited the injured ASUU National Welfare Officer, Ngozi Iloh, who is said to be responding to treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister’s Special Assistant (Media), Simeon Nwakaudu, said Wike solicited the permission of the family to allow the Federal Government participate in the burial ceremony of the former ASUU president.

“President Goodluck Jonathan and the entire administration are deeply pained by the sudden death of the former ASUU National President who played a key part in the negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government.

“We recall the significant contributions of Professor Iyayi during the 13-hour negotiations between President Jonathan and ASUU, which led to a headway in the discussions.

“I want to assure the family that the ideals that the late scholar fought and died for will never be forgotten. The Federal Government will diligently implement the decisions reached in the course of negotiations with ASUU.

“The Federal Ministry of Education wishes to be a part of the burial of this erudite scholar and we seek the permission of the family to participate in the burial. I pray God to grant the family the strength to bear this unfortunate loss,” Wike was quoted to have said.

Oriabure Iyayi, son of the late ASUU president, was said to have thanked President Jonathan, the Minister of Education and all Nigerians for commiserating with the family at their moment of grief.

A relative of the deceased, Prof. Robert Ebiwele, informed the minister that the burial will hold between December 5 and 9.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Thursday began seven days fasting and prayer for an end to the lingering ASUU strike. In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the corps, Mr Emmanuel Okeh said that he was.“Worried by the ongoing strike embarked upon by the ASUU, which has resulted in the shutdown of universities since July this year, NSCDC Commandant General has organised a special prayer for the nation.“

''The CG has declared seven days fasting and prayers nationwide to seek an ultimate solution to the problem,’’ it said.

Nigeria qualify for fifth World Cup

Nigeria qualify
Nigeria qualified for the fifth World Cup on Saturday in Calabra continuing an outstanding year for the team after it won the African Cup of Nations.

Nigeria became the first African country to qualify for next year's World Cup finals after a 2-0 home win over Ethiopia in their playoff in Calabar on Saturday.

Victor Moses converted a 20th-minute penalty and Victor Obinna added an 82nd-minute free kick for the second-leg success and a 4-1 aggregate win in the two-legged tie after Nigeria also won in Addis Ababa in last month's first leg.

Nigeria qualify for a fifth World Cup finals appearance in Brazil, having played in four of the last five tournaments.

Five teams will represent Africa at next year's tournament in Brazil.

Didier Drogba's Ivory Coast was set to play Senegal in the decisive leg of their play-off later on Saturday in neutral Morocco.

However, Super Eagles coach, Keshi maintains his love for his country will ensure he stays in the role despite having received lucrative offers to coach elsewhere.

"It is the love that I have for my country that has kept me in this place ever since," he told SuperSport.

"I go outside into the shops and markets and ordinary Nigerians in the streets are thanking me and asking God to continue to bless me. It humbles me.

"It makes me realise the responsibilities I have to these people and I keep at the job.

"I also have a fantastic group of young footballers, who I sincerely do not want to abandon at this moment.

"I have four offers on the table for me that will triple my wages but because of the reasons I have given I have told those offers to please go elsewhere."

No surprises here: Nigeria qualifies for 2014 World Cup

Nigeria qualifies for 2014 World Cup

Some doubted Nigeria's ability to qualify for World Cup 2014. Nigeria claimed the African's first place in next summer's world cup in Brazil with a 2:0 win of Ethiopia.

First the rain and then the sun in Calabar as Nigeria qualified for Brazil 2014 World cup after a two legged qualifier over Ethiopia. The Star Magazine is now reporting that Beyonce feels neglected by her husband, since Jay's Europe's tour with Justin Timberlake.

“Jay Z’s early November trip to Australia was not just a family getaway, it was a last-ditch effort to keep his marriage afloat,” an insider tells Star magazine.

“Jay Z’s decision to tour Europe at the same time as Beyonce is touring Australia has caused serious damage to their relationship — damage that may be ultimately prove to be irreparable.”
