Filipinos nail themselves to crosses on Good Friday

Catholic zealots in the Philippines nailed themselves to crosses to mark Good Friday. Tourists and locals looked on as 18 men had nails driven through their palms, and were then hoisted up onto crosses in a re-enactment of the crucifixion of Christ. The visitors watched barefoot Filipinos whip themselves then have nails driven through their hands before hanging for a few minutes on crosses.

bloody good friday

The re-enactments of the crucifixion of Christ yesterday drew thousands of tourists to the Pampanga region, 50 miles north of the capital, and a circus atmosphere prevailed.

"It's my first time to witness a man being crucified," said Charlotte Johansen, 26, a Norwegian charity worker taking pictures with her friends.

Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said the practice, which took hold in the province 60 years ago, was a distortion of Christ's teachings but he said the church could not stop the ritual.

"We do this because of our faith, not because we're paid," said Ruben Inaje, a house painter who has been crucified for 27 years.

"Two years ago, I said it would be the last time I'd do it. But every time I say that, my wife gets sick. I guess God wants me to continue."

Alex Laranang, a 58-year-old vendor who was the first to be nailed to a cross Friday, said he was doing it "for good luck and for my family to be healthy."

It was the 27th crucifixion for sign painter Ruben Enaje, 52, one of the most popular penitents from San Pedro Cutud village. He began his yearly rite after surviving a fall from a building.

Enaje screamed in pain as men dressed as Roman soldiers hammered stainless steel nails into his palms and feet. A wireless microphone carried his voice to loudspeakers for everyone watching to hear.

His cross was raised and he was hanged there for several minutes under the searing afternoon sun before the nails were pulled out and he was taken on a stretcher to a first aid station.

"It's intriguing and fascinating what makes people do something like this, how you can believe so much that you make yourself suffer to that extent," said Dita Tittesass, a tourist from Denmark.

Armed robbers serve notice of attack to Lagos residents

Armed robbers scared  Lagos residents on Good Friday issuing a notice of attack. Police have issued an alert for residents after armed robbers men served a notice on their intention to raid the area in Lagos State.
Copies of the letter, Saturday Sun learnt, were conspicuously pasted on the wall of some of the buildings.
Armed robbers serve Lagos residents notice

In the letter, the robbers said: “We will pay you people a visit soon. Be prepared for us.” Following the development, residents of the area have made arrangements to secure their houses.

While they have collectively engaged the services of vigilance groups, most of them have erected iron doors in their rooms. Some, however, have fled their homes. A resident, who spoke with Saturday Sun, said they woke up recently to discover the letter pasted on their gates and walls. “Initially, we thought the letter was from either PHCN or one of those bills from local government. We got the shock of our lives when we read and it was from robbers who said they would visit us any moment.

Another resident begged the police to come to their rescue, as the vigilance group they contracted seems not to be up to the task on hand. “It is not a joke, because like the letters said, they will surely come. We have vigilantes and we are made to pay N100 per month for security. The only way out is for the police to secure us. If they don’t, we will just keep money at home because I know that they will surely come,” he said. Another resident said she was yet to recover from the shock of a previous experience, revealing: “Late last year, they visited my house heavily-armed.

Gunmen Kills 50 in Plateau Nigeria

The shootings at Plateau Nigeria leaves 50 dead. On a day of Easter Celebrations, gunmen armed with assault rifles struck a village in Plateau and opened fire in the night while many were sleeping.
Death in Plateau Nigeria

Witnesses said the shooting lasted for almost two hours before the attackers fled. The Christian villagers there, who farm the fertile soils of Plateau state, blamed nomadic Hausa-Fulani cattle herdsmen for the attack. Such attacks remain common as Christian farmers clash with the herdsmen over land and grazing rights. Other attacks often are rooted in disputes over political and economic power in the region, which sits on the divide of Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north and largely Christian south.

Muhammadu Nura, the state secretary of a cattle breeders association, said Hausa-Fulani people had been killed in "reprisals," but denied herders were involved the attacks.

In recent days, witnesses and government officials say more than 50 people have been killed in attacks. That includes an assault Wednesday on a village in the Riyom local government area that killed 28 people and an attack Thursday in the Bokkos local government area that killed 18 civilians. The military said it killed six while trying to repel attackers in Thursday's assault.

Jos and surrounding Plateau state have been torn apart in recent years by violence pitting its different ethnic groups and major religions — Christianity and Islam — against each other. Human Rights Watch says at least 1,000 people were killed in communal clashes around Jos in 2010, attacks that saw whole villages killed. While major massacres haven't happened in the last few years, so-called "silent killings" continue and the two faiths have moved into different areas of the city.

Major attacks by Islamic extremists, including car bombings, also have hit the area in recent years as Nigeria's weak central government appears unable to stop the killings. With Easter on Sunday, government officials urged those living in Jos and the surrounding villages to be calm and peaceful during the holiday.

Plateau state Gov. Jonah Jang, a Christian long criticized for not doing more to stop the killings, said his government will continue to work for peace and prosperity in an area long beset by tension.

"Christians must claim this season, which symbolizes hope, by rededicating their lives to the teachings and path of Christ so as not to lose eternity," he said in a statement.

Many of his other novels, including Arrow of God, No Longer at Ease, Anthills of the Savannah, and A man of the People, were equally influential as well.

Prof Achebe was born in Ogidi, Anambra State, on November 16, 1930 and attended St Philips’ Central School at the age of six. He moved away from his family to Nekede, four kilometres from Owerri, the capital of Imo State, at the age of 12 and registered at the Central School there.

He attended Government College Umuahia for his secondary school education. He was a pioneer student of the University College, now University of Ibadan in 1948. He was first admitted to study medicine but changed to English, history and theology after his first year.

While studying at Ibadan, Mr. Achebe began to become critical of European literature about Africa. He eventually wrote his final papers in the University in 1953 and emerged with a second-class degree.

Prof Achebe taught for a while after graduation before joining the Nigeria Broadcasting Service in 1954 in Lagos.

While in Lagos with the Broadcast ing Service, Mr. Achebe met Christie Okoli, who later became his wife; they got married in 1961. The couple had four children.

He also played a major role during the Nigeria Civil War where he joined the Biafran Government as an ambassador.

His latest book, There Was a Country, was an autobiography on his experiences and views of the civil war. The book was probably the most criticised of his writings especially by Nigerians, with many arguing that the professor did not write a balanced account and wrote more as a Biafran than as a Nigerian.

Mr. Achebe was a consistent critic of various military dictators that ruled Nigeria and was a loud voice in denouncing the failure of governance in the country.

Twice, he rejected offers by the Nigerian government to grant him a national honour, citing the deplorable political situations in the country, particularly in his home state of Anambra, as reason.

May his soul rest in perfect peace
