Shell faces damages over Nigeria oil spill. A court in Hague, Netherlands ordered Shell to pay compensation to one Nigerian farmer for damages caused by oil pollution Wednesday.

This verdict is great news for the Nigerians in Ikot Ada Udo who has suffered alot from environmental pollution from the oil spill.

The amount of the fine will be determined in a separate case. However, in four other similar cases, Shell was acquitted from paying for damages caused by oil spills in Nigeria.

In the case about oil spills near the village of Ikot Ada Udo, the court ruled that: "Shell Nigeria, pursuant to applicable Nigerian law, has violated a duty of care and shall be held liable for tort of negligence."

However, the court established that the four other oil spills were not caused by defective maintenance by Shell, but by sabotage from third parties. "Pursuant to applicable Nigerian law, an oil company is not liable for oil spills caused by sabotage in principle," read a court statement.

Nigeria's Ministry of Finance, showed that Police colleges got N496m in 2012.

Budget Office of the Federation, Ministry of Finance, showed that N296.75m was budgeted for the upgrade of facilities including the college at Ikeja and another N200m  for the rehabilitation of Police Intelligence College, Challawa, Kano State.

Last week, President Goodluck Jonathan had visited the Police College, Ikeja, after Channels Television exposed the poor state of  the police academy.

As a result, an 11-man committee has been set up to probe the rot in police colleges nationwide.

The Executive Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Debo Adeniran, told Sunday Punch that “Even if they had budgeted N1bn for the upgrade of facilities at the police colleges, it will still not amount to anything because those in charge will divert the money into their pockets. There is simply no accountability in the system.

“For several years, different amounts of money have been budgeted for projects at those colleges but nobody has monitored implementation. The National Assembly and the minister of police affairs have not performed their oversight functions.”

More and more people are using trains in Lagos

People using trains in Lagos

Millions of people have spoken: They want to take the Lagos train.

Mr Niyi Alli, Director of Operations, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), on Wednesday said that the corporation has commenced two train services on Fridays on its Lagos-Kano passenger train services.

Alli told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the first train would leave Iddo for Ilorin by 9:00 a.m. while the second train would depart Iddo for Kano by 12:00 noon.

Rail passengers faced one problem on Wednesday as residual delays were expected due to congestion.

Ali said that the two train services would ease the congestion usually experienced on the Lagos/Kano route and reduce the arrival time in Kano.

NAN reports that the Lagos train initially arrived Kano between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays, but with the new development it will arrive Kano by 5:00 p.m.

"The demand for our services now is overwhelming, which shows that Nigerians are prepared to embrace train operation.

One man told Osaseye that the vestibule was full and people were lined up down the aisle on a train.

NAN reports that last week Friday, train commuters at the Agege, Ijoko, Inisha, Ikire, and other stations were not picked because ''more people were using the train''

''Same sex marriage is evil.'' Pastor Adeboye

Pastor Adeboye on Same sex marriage

The general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria, Pastor E.A Adeboye believes allowing gay couples to marry will wipe out humanity.

Adeboye made the comments during a university religious event on Monday that was held at Obafemi Awolowo University.

The pastor said: “Same-sex marriage is an anathema to the will of God for human beings to be fruitful, replenish and multiply on earth. Anything contrary to that is evil.

“How can a man who marries a fellow man produce a child and how can a woman who marries a fellow woman produce a child?

“If this evil is allowed to stay, there will not be newborns again in the world. As the older generation dies, will there be a new generations to succeed it? Even plants and animals have new generations to succeed them.”

The pastor called on people practicing homosexuality to repent and ‘flee from the wrath of God.

Nigerians unite against police brutality in Cape Town

Nigerians gathered to protest against alleged police brutality in Cape Town

Nigerian born Obinna Ugboaja's death has sparked the ire of the Nigerian community who marched to Cape Town's  parliament on Friday demanding an end to police brutality against Nigerians.
The Nigerian Union in the Cape Town business district argued that Nigerians were being targeted for brutal treatment by the police. They said in most cases brutality was swept under the carpet because of the false assumption that all Nigerians were criminals.

"I really don't know exactly what happened. They didn't tell me anything. They took me to the mortuary where I found my husband dead. His mouth and neck were full of blood and he had marks on his neck, like he had been held hard.
"They said he had overdosed on cocaine. He didn't even smoke cigarettes."
Kanyi Dyantyi said about his 32 year old fiance Ugboaja - who was a computer technician and had been living in South Africa for seven years.

Oprah scores big from exclusive interview with Lance Armstrong

Oprah scores big from exclusive interview with Lance Armstrong

Oprah Winfrey, 58, dominated as the queen US daytime television from 1986 through 2011.

Since the last episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the numerical eye catchy 1-11-11 launch of OWN, it's been an uphill battle for the pop culture icon with less than stellar ratings.

Whereas the final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show pulled in a staggering 16.4 million viewers, with an average of 6 million viewers a day. OWN backed by cable powerhouse Discovery Channel has attracted fewer than 300000 viewers.

OWN is losing millions according to a newly released report from Business Week magazine. According to the publication, OWN and its partner, Discovery, have both taken huge hits.

Discovery, who’s in partnership with the media mogul, helped launch the network and has been underwriting its costs with nearly $600 million invested in it since 2008. OWN’s estimated to have lost $330,000.

Her interview with Lance Armstrong, aired on both OWN and the Oprah.com website, could be a turning point.

"This is a huge 'get' for Oprah" given how OWN is not yet part of the [media] mainstream," celebrity biographer and author of Oprah: A Biography Kitty Kelley said.

"This is enormous for OWN in that it's probably going to be first time ever that many people have tuned into the channel," said Larry Gerbrandt of Media Valuation Partners.

For the second time in 2013, Winfrey has the interview everyone wants. Last time it was David Letterman. This time it’s Lance Armstrong.

That’s millions of viewers clicking through. Last March, the network scored its biggest audience to date for Winfrey’s interview with Whitney Houston’s daughter following the singer’s death.
The Armstrong broadcast could well exceed the 3.5 million viewers for that show.

Armstrong: I doped on all seven Tour de France wins

Armstrong tells all to TV's Oprah Winfrey

After years of denial, 41 year old Lance Armstrong has backpedaled in a confessional interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Thursday night.

He admitted unequivocally to using performance enhancing drugs in his seven Tour de France wins.

Did he use the blood enhancing hormone EPO? Steroids? and other blood doping?

Armstrong answered "yes" on all counts.

The former cycling great, who has been stripped of his Tour de France titles and an Olympic bronze medal, blamed no one but himself for his doping decisions.

He said:  “I view this situation as one big lie, which I repeated a lot of times. I know the truth — the truth wasn’t out there, the truth wasn’t what I said.

“The story was so perfect for so long. It was this mythic perfect story and that wasn’t true.

“I’m a flawed character, as you well know. All the fault, all the blame here is on me.

“Now the story is so bad and so toxic — and a lot of it is true.”

“I didn’t invent the culture, but I didn’t try and stop the culture.

“That’s my mistake and that was wrong and that is what I have to be sorry for. And the sport is now paying the price. I am sorry for that.” He added.

The question is why now? There must be something at stake.

''Somebody as arrogant as Lance Armstrong doesn't just give up because he feels guilty or he's too tired to fight. And if he's telling all now, after all this lying, you have to wonder what he's NOT telling? says Donna Anderson

It's not only the lying and cheating that's despicable, but also the fact that he threatened fellow team mates and anyone who dared to expose him.
